 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 357
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Texas Senate is proud to declare March 9, 1999,
 1-4     as Women in the Military and Texas Women Veteran's Day at the
 1-5     State Capitol as a special part of Women's History Month; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, From a precedent set more than 200 years ago,
 1-7     when Deborah Sampson, a brave patriot in the Revolutionary War,
 1-8     donned a man's clothes to fight for her country in a Massachusetts
 1-9     regiment, women have become an integral part of the nation's
1-10     fighting force, numbering 1,233,000 women veterans in the
1-11     United States and Puerto Rico in 1998 with 80,700 of the number
1-12     being Texas women; and
1-13           WHEREAS, America's women finally secured the right to serve
1-14     their country in war, as well as in times of peace, when Congress
1-15     passed the Women's Armed Services Integration Act in 1948; however,
1-16     as a minority in the services, the women recruits have received a
1-17     place of honor with their male counterparts only after having
1-18     proved themselves as brave and able soldiers; and
1-19           WHEREAS, The recognition of these brave women on Texas
1-20     Women Veteran's Day allows Texans an opportunity to express their
1-21     gratitude for the sacrifices and contributions women have made to
1-22     the security and defense of their country and as peacekeepers to
1-23     the world; now, therefore, be it
1-24           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 2-1     76th Legislature, proudly honor the women veterans of Texas
 2-2     on March 9, 1999, with sincere gratitude for their valor and
 2-3     contributions to our state and country; and, be it further
 2-4           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an
 2-5     expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
