 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 362
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to
 1-4     recognize Alisia Orosco of Clack Middle School in Abilene, Texas,
 1-5     for winning the silver medal for the outstanding Texas student
 1-6     volunteer honor in the middle school division of The Prudential
 1-7     Spirit of Community Awards; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, The national contest is sponsored by The Prudential
 1-9     Insurance Company of America and the National Association of
1-10     Secondary School Principals and honors all private and public
1-11     middle school and senior high school volunteers for their exemplary
1-12     service to their communities; and
1-13           WHEREAS, Twelve-year-old Alisia won her award for her
1-14     compassion for young children in pediatric wards who were there
1-15     because of illness or abuse and for her attempt to speed their
1-16     cures by providing a bright spot for them to focus on instead
1-17     of their pain and confinement in a hospital; her idea came from
1-18     seeing the joy that her family brought to her own seriously ill
1-19     little brother when they visited him with smiles and gifts, and
1-20     her first effort to cheer ill children who were without visitors
1-21     was to combine her allowance with her brother's to buy 15 stuffed
1-22     animals which, for distribution, they loaded into red wagons that
1-23     were decorated with red hearts with the words, "You are special!";
1-24     and
 2-1           WHEREAS, With the death of her little brother, Alisia
 2-2     expanded her efforts to reach even more unfortunate children
 2-3     by organizing other recruits to help her raise the money, which
 2-4     they used to buy 250 more stuffed animals to give to nonprofit
 2-5     organizations that aid children; and
 2-6           WHEREAS, Alisia's compassion for less fortunate children and
 2-7     her successful attempts to bring happiness into their lives, despite
 2-8     her young age, serves as an inspiration to all the nation's youth
 2-9     for the differences that they, too, could make in their own
2-10     communities; now, therefore, be it
2-11           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-12     76th Legislature, hereby commend Alisia Orosco for her selection
2-13     as one of the top two youth volunteers in Texas for the 1999
2-14     Prudential Spirit of Community Awards; and, be it further
2-15           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-16     Alisia with best wishes from the Texas Senate for her continuing
2-17     success as a volunteer and young leader in her community.
