1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 363 1-3 WHEREAS, The National Society Daughters of the American 1-4 Revolution was organized in 1890 and for the ensuing 100 years 1-5 has distinguished itself as the premier patriotic organization 1-6 in the United States; and 1-7 WHEREAS, The membership of the National Society Daughters 1-8 of the American Revolution is limited to American women who are 1-9 lineal blood descendants of an ancestor who aided in achieving 1-10 America's independence; and 1-11 WHEREAS, The commitment of the National Society Daughters 1-12 of the American Revolution was at its founding and remains today 1-13 "to perpetuate the memory and spirit of the men and women who 1-14 achieved American independence; to promote the development of an 1-15 enlightened public opinion; and to foster patriotic citizenship"; 1-16 and 1-17 WHEREAS, Those high and valued ideals were greeted with 1-18 great favor by patriotic Texas women who sought to join and further 1-19 those aims by founding local chapters of the National Society 1-20 Daughters of the American Revolution in the Lone Star State; and 1-21 WHEREAS, Florence Anderson Clark of Austin on 1-22 January 24, 1899, organized the first National Society Daughters 1-23 of the American Revolution chapter in the Texas capital city and 1-24 that chapter was chartered by the national organization on 2-1 February 28, 1899, as the Thankful Hubbard Chapter; and 2-2 WHEREAS, The Thankful Hubbard Chapter was named for 2-3 Mrs. Clark's great-grandmother, a gracious colonial lady of the 2-4 State of Connecticut who bore four sons who fought with valor in 2-5 the American Revolution; and 2-6 WHEREAS, The Thankful Hubbard Chapter then became one of 2-7 the five founding chapters of the Texas Society Daughters of the 2-8 American Revolution, and Mrs. Clark received just honors as the 2-9 first State Regent of the Texas Society; and 2-10 WHEREAS, The first organization meeting of the Thankful 2-11 Hubbard Chapter was held in the stately West Austin home of 2-12 Frances Hurlbut Evans, and that site today is the home of the 2-13 Austin Woman's Club and continues to be the meeting place of 2-14 the Thankful Hubbard Chapter; and 2-15 WHEREAS, Mrs. Evans served as the first chapter Regent of 2-16 Thankful Hubbard and went on to be honored as a Vice President 2-17 General of the National Society, one of many Thankful Hubbard 2-18 Chapter members who have distinguished themselves in offices of 2-19 high responsibility in the state and national societies; and 2-20 WHEREAS, In its long and glorious history, members of the 2-21 Thankful Hubbard Chapter have ensured the permanent recognition of 2-22 their founders and of Texas patriots by placing historic markers 2-23 on the graves of deceased chapter members, on the grave of American 2-24 and Texas revolutionary soldier Stephen Williams in the Texas State 2-25 Cemetery, under the Washington elm tree on the State Capitol 2-26 grounds, on the site at The University of Texas where a statue 3-1 honoring George Washington now stands, and at the Nike Hercules 3-2 missile base near Austin; and 3-3 WHEREAS, The Thankful Hubbard Chapter has contributed 3-4 generously to restoration projects in the Capital City including 3-5 the beautiful Austin Woman's Club, the historic Hinrich home, and 3-6 the home of writer O. Henry; and 3-7 WHEREAS, The chapter annually recognizes outstanding young 3-8 Americans by means of awarding Daughters of the American 3-9 Revolution good citizen honors to area high school students, 3-10 by sponsoring a scholarship to a graduating high school student, 3-11 and by recognizing an outstanding University of Texas Reserve 3-12 Officers Training Corps cadet; and 3-13 WHEREAS, Members of Thankful Hubbard generously provide 3-14 comfort items to hospitalized veterans, support Daughters of the 3-15 American Revolution schools for young people, and annually join 3-16 other Austin area Daughters of the American Revolution chapters 3-17 and the Sons of the American Revolution in moving ceremonies 3-18 celebrating Constitution Day and Washington's Birthday; and 3-19 WHEREAS, The chapter membership has included many 3-20 prominent and accomplished women of Austin and the state, among 3-21 them Mrs. Julia Bremond, Mrs. Ben Powell, Mrs. Sterling Fulmore, 3-22 Mrs. Walter Prescott Webb, Mrs. Price Daniel, Dr. Jean Andrews, 3-23 and Mrs. Bob Bullock; and 3-24 WHEREAS, The mantle of leadership of the Thankful Hubbard 3-25 Chapter is vested in Laurie Fisher Dodson as Chapter Regent in 3-26 this very special year of the chapter's Centennial Anniversary; 4-1 and 4-2 WHEREAS, The occasion of this Centennial Celebration 4-3 inspires the chapter not only to preserve and revere its heritage 4-4 but equally to commit with fervor to a future filled with patriotism 4-5 and pride in America; now, therefore, be it 4-6 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 4-7 76th Legislature, hereby recognize with deep appreciation the 4-8 past century of patriotic works and high-minded community gifts 4-9 bestowed in the Capital City by Thankful Hubbard Chapter National 4-10 Society Daughters of the American Revolution; and, be it further 4-11 RESOLVED, That the Texas Senate salute the Thankful Hubbard 4-12 Chapter on its 100th Anniversary and extend best wishes to the 4-13 250 members of Thankful Hubbard. 4-14 Barrientos 4-15 ______________________________________ 4-16 President of the Senate 4-17 I hereby certify that the above 4-18 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 4-19 on March 8, 1999. 4-20 ______________________________________ 4-21 Secretary of the Senate 4-22 ______________________________________ 4-23 Member, Texas Senate
