1-1                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 369
 1-2           WHEREAS, The Texas A&M University football team earned
 1-3     its first Big 12 Conference championship in a thrilling 36-33
 1-4     double overtime victory over the Kansas State Wildcats, and this
 1-5     remarkable triumph is indeed worthy of special praise; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, Played in the TransWorld Dome in Saint Louis,
 1-7     Missouri, before more than 60,000 fans and a national television
 1-8     audience, this exhilarating battle saw the mighty Texas Aggies,
 1-9     under the masterful guidance of Head Coach R. C. Slocum and his
1-10     coaching staff, claim the conference crown and snap the highly
1-11     regarded Wildcats' 19-game winning streak; and
1-12           WHEREAS, The road to the 1998 title game proved to be
1-13     a remarkable show of athletic prowess for the Aggies, who played
1-14     a schedule filled with many top-rated national foes and a Big 12
1-15     South division stacked with formidable opponents; one of their
1-16     most compelling regular season victories was a 28-21 defeat
1-17     of then second-ranked University of Nebraska that ended the
1-18     Cornhuskers' 19-game winning streak and marked the highest-ranked
1-19     team the Aggies had ever beaten; and
1-20           WHEREAS, Texas A&M finished with an 11-3 record, achieving
1-21     that number of wins for only the third time in school history, and
1-22     the team capped off the campaign with an impressive showing in the
1-23     1999 Nokia Sugar Bowl against the Ohio State Buckeyes; and
1-24           WHEREAS, This stellar season was the culmination of
 2-1     many hours of hard work and dedication by the members of the
 2-2     Texas A&M University football team, and as they look back with
 2-3     pride and satisfaction on their Big 12 championship, it is indeed
 2-4     fitting to pay tribute to them for their outstanding accomplishment;
 2-5     now, therefore, be it
 2-6           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 2-7     76th Legislature, hereby honor the 1998 Texas A&M University
 2-8     football team on winning its first Big 12 Conference championship
 2-9     and extend to the players, coaches, and staff sincere best wishes
2-10     for continued success in the years to come; and, be it further
2-11           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
2-12     prepared for Head Coach R. C. Slocum and the members of the
2-13     Texas A&M University football team as an expression of high
2-14     regard from the Texas Senate.
