1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 370 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in 1-4 recognizing the members of the Dr. Emmett J. Conrad Student 1-5 Advisory Committee of Senator Royce West on the occasion of 1-6 their visit to the State Capitol on Tuesday, March 9, 1999; and 1-7 WHEREAS, Comprised of junior high school and high school 1-8 students who are leaders of student council and student class 1-9 governments, the Student Advisory Committee includes young people 1-10 from the Dallas, Duncanville, Grand Prairie, and Lancaster school 1-11 districts; this year, 21 advisors and 111 Student Advisory 1-12 Committee members are attending SAC Day at the Capitol; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Created in the spring of 1996, the Student Advisory 1-14 Committee was established for the purpose of helping students 1-15 to build leadership skills and to meet with leaders across the 1-16 state; it was also established with the goal of helping students 1-17 to discover the avenues through which they can participate in 1-18 community volunteerism and giving them a means through which they 1-19 can voice their perspective on legislative issues; and 1-20 WHEREAS, Since its creation, the Student Advisory Committee 1-21 has accomplished a great deal in the community; the students have 1-22 been making visits to eight nursing homes throughout District 23, 1-23 learning about the needs of senior citizens; and 1-24 WHEREAS, The committee members have worked hard on behalf 2-1 of the Children's Hope Foundation and collected more than 500 2-2 new clothing items for homeless children; they have participated 2-3 in toy, blanket, and voters' registration drives and have provided 2-4 testimony at the Senate Interim Committee on Juvenile Justice and 2-5 Gangs hearing in Dallas; and 2-6 WHEREAS, The students have volunteered at the Bluitt-Flowers 2-7 Halloween Carnival, have held annual receptions for elected 2-8 officials, and have donated blankets to a homeless shelter through 2-9 the Dallas Life Foundation; and 2-10 WHEREAS, The Student Advisory Committee is a significant 2-11 asset to District 23, and its members are expanding their 2-12 knowledge and honing their leadership skills through the 2-13 networking opportunities they have experienced and through 2-14 their extensive participation in volunteerism; now, therefore, 2-15 be it 2-16 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-17 76th Legislature, hereby commend the members of the 2-18 Dr. Emmett J.
