1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 371 1-2 WHEREAS, Audie Leon Murphy was born on June 24, 1924, in 1-3 Kingston, Hunt County, Texas, to Emmett and Josie Killian Murphy; 1-4 and 1-5 WHEREAS, Audie Leon Murphy enlisted to enter the United States 1-6 Army in Greenville, Texas, and was subsequently assigned to the 1-7 United States Army 3rd Armored Division, and participated in seven 1-8 campaigns in North Africa and Europe; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Audie Murphy was awarded numerous United States and 1-10 foreign decorations, including the Medal of Honor, the Legion of 1-11 Merit, and the French Croix de Guerre, and he was subsequently the 1-12 most decorated combat soldier of World War II; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Audie Leon Murphy, after his home state offered him 1-14 numerous honors and accolades, went to Hollywood and starred in 1-15 numerous motion pictures, including To Hell and Back based on 1-16 his autobiography of the same name; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Audie Leon Murphy died in a 1971 plane crash and was 1-18 honored with burial in Arlington National Cemetery; and 1-19 WHEREAS, The United States Congress, the United States Armed 1-20 Forces, and various states around the nation have paid and continue 1-21 to pay tribute to this most decorated soldier; and 1-22 WHEREAS, Over 60,000 signatures have been collected to 1-23 petition the United States Postal Service to place Audie Murphy 1-24 on a United States postage stamp; now, therefore, be it 2-1 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-2 76th Legislature, hereby proclaim April 10, 1999, as Audie Murphy 2-3 Day in Greenville, Celeste, and all of Hunt County, Texas, and 2-4 throughout the State of Texas and urge all Texans and all Americans 2-5 to honor Audie L.
