 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 373
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great pleasure
 1-4     in recognizing Leo Cancellare of El Paso for his many contributions
 1-5     to his community, his city, and the State of Texas; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, A graduate of Irvin High School and
 1-7     The University of Texas at El Paso, Mr. Cancellare is a well-known
 1-8     coach of the El Paso Aqua Posse Swim Team and the principal and
 1-9     president of Cathedral High School; and
1-10           WHEREAS, The head coach of El Paso Aqua Posse since 1979,
1-11     his excellence as a coach is reflected by the fact that over
1-12     80 El Paso Aqua Posse swimmers have gone to college on
1-13     swimming scholarships; they have been accepted by such schools
1-14     as The University of Texas, Stanford, Texas Christian University,
1-15     Southern Methodist University, the University of Southern
1-16     California, and Notre Dame; and
1-17           WHEREAS, Coach Cancellare has trained five Olympic Team
1-18     members and several Olympic Trials qualifiers, and he has produced
1-19     79 swimming high school All-Americans; and
1-20           WHEREAS, The El Paso Aqua Posse holds over 80 percent of all
1-21     border swimming records; the main ingredient in this success has
1-22     been Coach Cancellare; and
1-23           WHEREAS, Beloved by all El Pasoans, Leo Cancellare has
1-24     positively affected the lives of innumerable people, including
 2-1     swimmers, parents, and teachers; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, Throughout Coach Cancellare's illustrious career,
 2-3     he has had the love and support of his wife, Vera, who is the
 2-4     Assistant Principal at Bassett Middle School, and his three
 2-5     children, Sarah, Vito, and Emily; and
 2-6           WHEREAS, The recipient of many honors and awards, he was
 2-7     inducted into the El Paso Sports Hall of Fame in 1994,
 2-8     received the Golden Nugget Award for the Outstanding Alumnus of
 2-9     The University of Texas at El Paso in 1998, and was saluted
2-10     with an appreciation dinner on March 6, 1999; now, therefore,
2-11     be it
2-12           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-13     76th Legislature, hereby commend the life and superb career of
2-14     the incomparable Coach Leo Cancellare; and, be it further
2-15           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
2-16     for him as an expression of the highest regard and esteem of the
2-17     Texas Senate.
