1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 374 1-3 In Memory 1-4 of 1-5 C. D. Jarvis 1-6 WHEREAS, The Texas Senate joins the citizens of El Paso 1-7 and countless former students at El Paso High School in mourning 1-8 the loss of Coach C. D. Jarvis, who died on February 14, 1999; and 1-9 WHEREAS, A renowned coach at El Paso High School since 1-10 1945, C. D. Jarvis was noted for his ability to teach his 1-11 players excellent basketball, and he is remembered for his 1-12 devotion to and the mentoring of his young charges; and 1-13 WHEREAS, A native Texan, C. D. Jarvis was born in Austin on 1-14 November 3, 1914; he graduated from Texas A&I University in 1-15 Kingsville in 1938 and began his coaching and teaching career 1-16 at Taft High School; and 1-17 WHEREAS, After Coach Jarvis taught at Taft, he transferred 1-18 to Mission High School in Mission, Texas, as assistant coach; 1-19 Coach Jarvis was impressed with a young quarterback's tenacity, 1-20 as he was the first to come to practice and the last to leave; 1-21 the young football player was Tom Landry; and 1-22 WHEREAS, A patriotic American, in 1942, Coach Jarvis joined 1-23 his country's fighting men and women in the United States Navy, 1-24 where he served as an athletics specialist at several different 2-1 locations in the United States; and 2-2 WHEREAS, In 1945, Coach Jarvis began his tenure at El Paso 2-3 High School which was to last for 40 years until his retirement 2-4 in 1985; for his superb dedication to his coaching, he was 2-5 rewarded in 1947 when the El Paso High School Tigers won the 2-6 state championship; and 2-7 WHEREAS, Winning the state championship in 1947 was 2-8 considered remarkable because of the time in which it took 2-9 place in our country's history; the student body was composed 2-10 of more diverse ethnic groups, and most of them were from poor 2-11 families; and 2-12 WHEREAS, Under Coach Jarvis, the El Paso High School Tigers 2-13 won district or regional championships in 1953, 1956, 1965, 1972, 2-14 1973, and 1982; and 2-15 WHEREAS, His former students repeatedly emphasize that 2-16 Coach Jarvis's effect on them sprang from more than his strictness 2-17 as a coach; he taught each one self-esteem and inspired them to 2-18 expect more from themselves; and 2-19 WHEREAS, Coach Jarvis received many awards for his fine 2-20 coaching and teaching; he was named Favorite Male Teacher or 2-21 Top Tiger Tamer repeatedly; the recipient of numerous honors, 2-22 he was inducted into the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame, received 2-23 the Conquistador Award from the City of El Paso, was awarded the 2-24 Hispanic and Business Alliance for Education Award, and was shown 2-25 respect by the naming of the El Paso High School Gymnasium in his 2-26 honor; now, therefore, be it 3-1 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-2 76th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to 3-3 the members of his family: his wife, Fae; his son, Damon; 3-4 his sisters, Nora Bell and Betty; his brother, Hamilton; and 3-5 his granddaughter, Zarisa; and, be it further 3-6 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the 3-7 members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy 3-8 from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this 3-9 day, it do so in memory of Coach C. D.
