1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 382 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great pleasure 1-4 in joining the citizens of Shelby County in the celebration of 1-5 Shelby County Day at the State Capitol on March 17, 1999; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Bordering Louisiana with the Sabine River serving as 1-7 its eastern boundary, Shelby County lies in far central East Texas; 1-8 and 1-9 WHEREAS, One of the first counties in Texas, Shelby County 1-10 was created in 1836 by the Congress of the Republic of Texas and 1-11 was organized in 1837; the new county received its name in honor of 1-12 Isaac Shelby who was a soldier from Tennessee in the United States 1-13 Revolutionary War; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Shelby County served as a place of temporary rest for 1-15 many weary settlers entering Texas, and in 1841 and 1844 the area 1-16 was torn by the violence of the Regulator and Moderator Wars; and 1-17 WHEREAS, For 100 years, people have enjoyed the most 1-18 unique landmark in Shelby County, the 19th century courthouse in 1-19 Center, Texas, which was modeled after an Irish castle, complete 1-20 with turrets and towers; and 1-21 WHEREAS, The scenic beauty of the area is enhanced by 1-22 the waters of the Toledo Bend and Pinkston reservoirs and the 1-23 stately trees of Sabine National Forest which are home to a host 1-24 of wildlife; local people and tourists enjoy the tranquility of 2-1 outdoor recreation in this natural setting; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Pine, cypress, gum, live oak, and post oak trees 2-3 grow in Shelby County and provide the timber for the sawmills which 2-4 generate jobs and income for the county's economy; and 2-5 WHEREAS, Known for its broiler and egg production, the 2-6 poultry business is also a major source of income for the people 2-7 of Shelby County; and 2-8 WHEREAS, Of great pride to Shelby County is the 4-H Rough 2-9 Rider Precision Riding Team which for the last 20 years has won 2-10 first place in state competition and the Rough Rider Drill Team 2-11 which has also won first place in its state division for the last 2-12 14 years; now, therefore, be it 2-13 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-14 76th Legislature, hereby recognize March 17, 1999, as 2-15 Shelby County Day and extend best wishes to its residents for a 2-16 a most enjoyable and rewarding event; and, be it further 2-17 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-18 Shelby County by the Texas Senate as a memento of this special day 2-19 at the State Capitol. 2-20 Nixon 2-21 ______________________________________ 2-22 President of the Senate 2-23 I hereby certify that the above 2-24 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-25 on March 17, 1999. 2-26 ______________________________________ 2-27 Secretary of the Senate 2-28 ______________________________________ 2-29 Member, Texas Senate
