1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 430 1-3 In Memory 1-4 of 1-5 Perry Kallison 1-6 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens 1-7 of San Antonio in mourning the loss of civic leader and radio 1-8 personality Perry Kallison, who died February 13, 1999, at the 1-9 age of 95; and 1-10 WHEREAS, One of the founders of the San Antonio Livestock 1-11 Exposition, Mr. Kallison was active until the last few years in 1-12 many community groups, including Boysville, Goodwill Industries, 1-13 the San Antonio Zoological Society, and the American Red Cross; and 1-14 WHEREAS, A native San Antonian, Perry Kallison was born 1-15 on November 1, 1903, to Anna and Nathan Kallison; he married 1-16 Frances Kallison on March 8, 1931, in San Antonio; and 1-17 WHEREAS, A well-known radio personality, Mr. Kallison had 1-18 the idea for his popular program, "Kallison's Trading Post," 1-19 while on a car trip with his wife in New Mexico; the show was 1-20 quite popular in the 1940s and 1950s, when Texas was still 1-21 largely a rural state; and 1-22 WHEREAS, The show ran for decades, beginning in 1936; 1-23 anything any person wanted to sell or trade, except real estate, 1-24 was included in the show, which also contained weather updates, 2-1 crop reports, the cattle market, and death notices; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Mr. Kallison used his show to generate support 2-3 for the bond sale which made possible the building of a coliseum 2-4 and barns for an annual rodeo and livestock exhibition; he served 2-5 as a commissioner appointed by the county to oversee the coliseum 2-6 for several years; and 2-7 WHEREAS, Mr. Kallison promoted soil conservation education 2-8 and practices in Bexar County and the State of Texas; he received 2-9 an award from the farm and ranch committee of the San Antonio 2-10 Chamber of Commerce for his contributions to Texas agriculture; 2-11 and 2-12 WHEREAS, A past president of the San Antonio Jewish 2-13 Federation, Perry Kallison was president of the Bexar County 2-14 Cancer Society; he worked actively for the American Polled 2-15 Hereford Association and the Texas Polled Hereford Association 2-16 and founded and was president of the South Texas Polled Hereford 2-17 Association; and 2-18 WHEREAS, An exemplary and distinguished gentleman, he was 2-19 respected for his many accomplishments and was a leader in his 2-20 community; and 2-21 WHEREAS, Perry Kallison was a devoted husband, father, 2-22 grandfather, and great-grandfather, and he leaves memories which 2-23 will be treasured always by his family and many friends; now, 2-24 therefore, be it 2-25 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-26 76th Legislature, hereby express sincere condolences to the 3-1 members of his family: his wife, Frances Kallison; his children, 3-2 Maryann Friedman, Perry M.
