 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 437
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in
 1-4     recognizing March 22, 1999, as American Association of Retired
 1-5     Persons Legislative Day at the Capitol; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP)
 1-7     was established in 1958 for the purpose of improving the lives
 1-8     of older Americans through service, advocacy, education, and
 1-9     volunteer efforts; and
1-10           WHEREAS, A nonprofit, nonpartisan association, the
1-11     American Association of Retired Persons is the nation's leading
1-12     organization for people age 50 and older and is designed to
1-13     enrich the lives of this population and to excel as a dynamic
1-14     presence in every community; and
1-15           WHEREAS, There are two million Association members in
1-16     Texas, and the organization has been developing Information
1-17     Centers around the state to keep the communities better
1-18     informed about its services; the American Association of
1-19     Retired Persons opened a Texas state office in Austin in 1995;
1-20     and
1-21           WHEREAS, On March 22, 1,000 association members from
1-22     across the state will be meeting with their legislators
1-23     regarding their top legislative issues and will be attending
1-24     a "Fight Phone Fraud Rally"; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, Top priorities of the American Association of
 2-2     Retired Persons for the 76th Legislative Session are
 2-3     anti-telemarketing fraud, licensing requirements for assisted
 2-4     living facilities, home health, and nursing home resident
 2-5     protections; the American Association of Retired Persons is
 2-6     also an advocate for lower electric utility costs for all
 2-7     classes of consumers; and
 2-8           WHEREAS, Throughout our state and across the nation,
 2-9     older citizens have benefitted greatly from the American
2-10     Association of Retired Persons programs, its leadership,
2-11     and its active interest in legislative issues, and the
2-12     organization truly deserves recognition for the many benefits
2-13     it provides; now, therefore, be it
2-14           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-15     76th Legislature, hereby commend the American Association
2-16     of Retired Persons for its countless contributions to the
2-17     people of our state and country and extend best wishes for
2-18     a successful and informative American Association of Retired
2-19     Persons Legislative Day in Austin; and, be it further
2-20           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
2-21     honor of the American Association of Retired Persons as an
2-22     expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
