1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 453 1-3 WHEREAS, On March 31, 1999, the Texas Senate will join with 1-4 the members of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, in 1-5 honoring one of the Lone Star State's most renowned community 1-6 service organizations; and 1-7 WHEREAS, The sorority was founded in 1913 by 22 women at Howard 1-8 University for the dual purpose of promoting scholastic achievement 1-9 and aiding members of the local community; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Today the organization has more than 700 chapters 1-11 and 200,000 members internationally, and it has become one of the 1-12 world's leading sororities for African-American women; its hardworking 1-13 members have dedicated themselves to enhancing the lives of others 1-14 through their involvement in a number of health and human services 1-15 concerns; and 1-16 WHEREAS, The sisters of Delta Sigma Theta have been involved in 1-17 many diverse endeavors that promote educational development, economic 1-18 development, physical and mental health, political awareness and 1-19 involvement, and international awareness and involvement, both in 1-20 their local communities and on a global scale; and 1-21 WHEREAS, To accomplish its lofty goals, the sorority has 1-22 initiated a number of innovative and highly successful programs 1-23 addressing illiteracy, drug abuse, unemployment, gang violence, 1-24 homelessness, teen pregnancy, infant mortality, clinical depression, 2-1 diabetes, and AIDS; sorority members, including mayors, legislators, 2-2 university presidents, and United States presidential appointees, 2-3 currently take an active role in shaping education and health policy 2-4 in our state and nation; and 2-5 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority stands at the forefront of 2-6 Texas' community service organizations, and it gives the Senate great 2-7 pleasure to recognize this group for its exceptional work on behalf 2-8 of others; now, therefore, be it 2-9 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-10 76th Legislature, hereby designate March 31, 1999, as Delta Days at 2-11 the State Capitol in honor of the members and officers of Delta Sigma 2-12 Theta Sorority, Incorporated; and, be it further 2-13 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be prepared 2-14 for the members and officers of this distinguished organization as an 2-15 expression of high esteem by the Texas Senate. 2-16 West, Ellis 2-17 Armbrister Harris Nixon 2-18 Barrientos Haywood Ogden 2-19 Bernsen Jackson Ratliff 2-20 Bivins Lindsay Shapiro 2-21 Brown Lucio Shapleigh 2-22 Cain Luna Sibley 2-23 Carona Madla Truan 2-24 Duncan Moncrief Wentworth 2-25 Fraser Nelson Whitmire 2-26 Gallegos Zaffirini 2-27 Perry, President of the Senate 2-28 ______________________________________ 2-29 President of the Senate 2-30 I hereby certify that the above 2-31 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-32 on March 31, 1999. 2-33 ______________________________________ 2-34 Secretary of the Senate 2-35 ______________________________________ 2-36 Member, Texas Senate 2-37 ______________________________________ 3-1 Member, Texas Senate
