1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 470 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure in 1-4 recognizing Eckhard Pfeiffer, President and Chief Executive Officer 1-5 of Compaq Computer Corporation, who was recently selected by the 1-6 University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics 1-7 Alumni Association to receive the Quest for Excellence Award on 1-8 April 9, 1999; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Mr. Pfeiffer is being honored for his leadership 1-10 role in the advancement of information technology to serve and 1-11 to benefit society, his commitment to higher education, and his 1-12 outstanding service to Houston, the State of Texas, and the nation; 1-13 and 1-14 WHEREAS, The Quest for Excellence Award commends an individual 1-15 in the sciences for his contribution to the advancement of society 1-16 and the quality of life through science and education; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Born in Germany, Eckhard Pfeiffer was with Texas 1-18 Instruments for 20 years; through the years, he rose to higher 1-19 positions of responsibility to become director of European 1-20 operations for the company and then Vice President of Corporate 1-21 Marketing; and 1-22 WHEREAS, A believer in taking risks, he took a big one in 1-23 1983; he left Texas Instruments to join a new company, Compaq, 1-24 with one product and an enormous vision of the future of computing; 2-1 in 1991, he was named the Chief Executive Officer of Compaq; he 2-2 envisioned the company becoming the world personal computer leader 2-3 by 1996 and accomplished that goal by 1994; and 2-4 WHEREAS, Accorded accolades by Fortune magazine 2-5 for making a corporate comeback, Mr. Pfeiffer was named CEO 2-6 of the Year by CNBC; his next goal was to make his company one 2-7 of the top three computer companies in the world, and he has 2-8 accomplished that; and 2-9 WHEREAS, Mr. Pfeiffer credits his company's success to 2-10 a dedication to excellence and believes that every part of an 2-11 organization must be devoted to that goal; and 2-12 WHEREAS, Active in civic endeavors, Mr. Pfeiffer is on the 2-13 boards of the Greater Houston Partnership, the Houston Symphony, 2-14 and the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center; in addition, Eckhard Pfeiffer 2-15 is a member of the Computer Systems Project, an affiliation of 2-16 the chief executive officers of the top United States computer 2-17 companies; and 2-18 WHEREAS, The proceeds from the gala being held on 2-19 April 9, 1999, will endow a Chair in Eckhard Pfeiffer's name 2-20 and will fund faculty development grants and scholarships at the 2-21 University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics; 2-22 now, therefore, be it 2-23 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-24 76th Legislature, hereby congratulate Eckhard Pfeiffer on being 2-25 the recipient of the University of Houston's Quest for Excellence 2-26 Award; and, be it further 3-1 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him 3-2 as an expression of the high regard and esteem of the Texas Senate. 3-3 Ellis 3-4 ______________________________________ 3-5 President of the Senate 3-6 I hereby certify that the above 3-7 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-8 on March 24, 1999. 3-9 ______________________________________ 3-10 Secretary of the Senate 3-11 ______________________________________ 3-12 Member, Texas Senate
