 1-5                                 Frank Jones
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
 1-7     citizens of Houston in mourning the loss of Frank Jones, who died
 1-8     March 7, 1999, at the age of 84; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Frank Jones was famous as the owner of the "This Is
1-10     It Cafe," located in the historic Fourth Ward area in Houston; and
1-11           WHEREAS, Frank and his wife, Mattie, established the cafe 40
1-12     years ago on March 3, 1959, on Andrews Street; the restaurant was
1-13     later moved to West Gray Street, and several years ago ownership
1-14     was passed down to Frank Jones's grandson, Craig Joseph; and
1-15           WHEREAS, Noted for his old-fashioned style of culinary
1-16     expertise, Frank Jones will be remembered by world-renowned
1-17     celebrities, as well as local patrons, for the "oxtails and
1-18     chitlins" and "ol'time food" he served; the cafe's food was made
1-19     famous by Frank's secret seasonings; and
1-20           WHEREAS, In 1993, the movie Jason's Lyric was filmed
1-21     at the restaurant's second location, and in 1997, the "This Is
1-22     It Cafe" earned the Heritage Award as an enduring part of the
1-23     African-American business community; and
1-24           WHEREAS, An exemplary gentleman with an engaging personality,
 2-1     Frank Jones was beloved and respected by the Houston community and
 2-2     by his restaurant's many patrons; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, A gifted chef and a man of integrity and generosity,
 2-4     Frank Jones gave unselfishly of his time to others, and his wisdom,
 2-5     warmth, and sense of humor will not be forgotten by those who knew
 2-6     him; and
 2-7           WHEREAS, Frank Jones was a devoted husband, father, and
 2-8     grandfather who lived his life to the fullest, and he leaves
 2-9     behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and
2-10     many friends; now, therefore, be it
2-11           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-12     76th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
2-13     family of Frank Jones; and, be it further
2-14           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
2-15     members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
2-16     Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so
2-17     in memory of Frank Jones.
