1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 477 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great 1-4 pleasure in recognizing the 100th anniversary of Jacksonville 1-5 College's founding; for a century, this venerable institution 1-6 has given its students quality education firmly rooted in the 1-7 principles of the Judeo-Christian faith; and 1-8 WHEREAS, In January, 1899, a group of prominent 1-9 East Texas Baptists met to discuss their community's need for 1-10 an institution of higher learning; by June, a charter had been 1-11 issued to the founders, and Jacksonville College was born; a 1-12 three-story building was completed at the college's present 1-13 location for dedicatory and cornerstone laying ceremonies on 1-14 November 30, 1899; over the past 100 years, the college has 1-15 educated thousands of students; it has become a cultural center 1-16 of East Texas and a charitable resource for the community; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Founders of Jacksonville College were dedicated to 1-18 a liberal arts education with a Christian emphasis; Jacksonville 1-19 College's educational mission embraced three basic tenants: a 1-20 biblical view of mankind and his relationship/responsibility to 1-21 His Creator; the recognition that all truth ultimately belongs to 1-22 God, so that finally, there is no conflict between curricular and 1-23 biblical studies; and a Christian worldview which acknowledges 1-24 that the world, with all its systems, belongs to God, who has 2-1 appointed men as the earth's caretakers; today, Jacksonville College 2-2 proudly abides by the principles proposed at her establishment, and 2-3 for her steadfastness, Jacksonville College is thankful to God; and 2-4 WHEREAS, Jacksonville College takes joy in serving her 2-5 students well and strives to instill in her pupils this selfsame 2-6 desire to help and serve humanity; students are encouraged to give 2-7 to their fellow man through their choice of profession; alumni have 2-8 heeded their alma mater's wishes; they represent their college in 2-9 the fields of education, government, religion, medicine, health 2-10 care, industry, technology, science, business, and music; and 2-11 WHEREAS, Jacksonville College attributes her longevity to 2-12 many people: dedicated trustees who have volunteered their 2-13 service; faculty who fervently believe in her mission; churches 2-14 of the Baptist Missionary Association of Texas who support her 2-15 both morally and financially; First Baptist Church, Jacksonville, 2-16 whose generous donations have nurtured her; thousands of students 2-17 who are dedicated to her ideals; and the 14 loyal men who have 2-18 served her as president; and 2-19 WHEREAS, Jacksonville College is truly a blessing to her 2-20 students, her faculty, her staff, and the community at large; 2-21 now, therefore, be it 2-22 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-23 76th Legislature, hereby congratulate Jacksonville College 2-24 on celebrating her 100th anniversary and extend best wishes 2-25 for her next century of educating Texans; and, be it further 2-26 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared 3-1 for Jacksonville College as an expression of esteem from the 3-2 Texas Senate. 3-3 Nixon 3-4 ______________________________________ 3-5 President of the Senate 3-6 I hereby certify that the above 3-7 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-8 on March 24, 1999. 3-9 ______________________________________ 3-10 Secretary of the Senate 3-11 ______________________________________ 3-12 Member, Texas Senate
