1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 484 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in 1-3 recognizing Thelma Daniel Conine, the first woman to be elected 1-4 to the Grapevine City Council, on the grand occasion of her 1-5 90th birthday, which took place March 11, 1999; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Thelma was the owner and operator of the Grapevine 1-7 Beauty Shop when her co-workers dared her to run for election to 1-8 the city council; she was elected to the council as its first woman 1-9 member in 1972 and served a second term two years later; and 1-10 WHEREAS, A third-generation Grapevine resident, Thelma Conine 1-11 opened the beauty shop in 1944, and following her retirement, she 1-12 continued to give haircuts to her longtime clients; and 1-13 WHEREAS, A well-known community leader and an active 1-14 volunteer, Thelma has donated her time and energy to a number of 1-15 causes and associations; she has led classes in tatting at the 1-16 senior center and donated many hours to a variety of historical 1-17 projects; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Thelma Conine is also a talented painter and enjoys 1-19 quilting, making dolls, and pottery; and 1-20 WHEREAS, A reception in honor of Thelma Conine's birthday 1-21 and her service on the city council was held on March 11, 1999, at 1-22 the Beaux Arts Gallery; now, therefore, be it 1-23 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 1-24 76th Legislature, hereby commend Thelma Daniel Conine on her 2-1 talents and many accomplishments and extend best wishes to her 2-2 on the occasion of her 90th birthday; and, be it further 2-3 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her 2-4 as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. 2-5 Nelson 2-6 ______________________________________ 2-7 President of the Senate 2-8 I hereby certify that the above 2-9 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-10 on March 25, 1999. 2-11 ______________________________________ 2-12 Secretary of the Senate 2-13 ______________________________________ 2-14 Member, Texas Senate
