 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 487
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to
 1-4     recognize Sandra Rushing, who is an inductee into the 1999 El Paso
 1-5     Women's Hall of Fame; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, Created by the El Paso Commission on Women in 1985,
 1-7     the El Paso Women's Hall of Fame is intended to honor notable
 1-8     women in the city who have made significant contributions to their
 1-9     community; and
1-10           WHEREAS, Selected for the category of Sports/Athletics, Sandra
1-11     was nominated for membership by The University of Texas at El Paso
1-12     Women's Advisory to the President; and
1-13           WHEREAS, Sandra went to The University of Texas at El Paso
1-14     in 1990, and her goal was to become a Division I head women's
1-15     basketball coach; at the time, The University of Texas at El Paso
1-16     had a lackluster program with only 83 wins during the 1980s,
1-17     community support was lacking, and team morale was quite low; and
1-18           WHEREAS, With a dynamic approach, Sandra enlisted the efforts
1-19     of the team members to become highly visible; both Coach Rushing
1-20     and her team speak at local schools, stressing to children the
1-21     importance of staying in school; the team is frequently seen
1-22     participating in community festivals, walking in parades, and
1-23     often they write to children in pen pal programs; and
1-24           WHEREAS, The coach who has won the most games in
 2-1     The University of Texas at El Paso women's basketball history,
 2-2     she had the most successful season in school history in 1992-1993;
 2-3     the Miners broke the school record for the best start in history
 2-4     with a 7-0 mark during the 1996-1997 campaign, and Sandra Rushing
 2-5     was named 1997-1998 Western Athletic Conference Co-Coach of the
 2-6     Year; and
 2-7           WHEREAS, Sandra Rushing has overcome many obstacles to her
 2-8     achievements; she has incredible dedication and expects as much from
 2-9     her players and staff as she does of herself; now, therefore, be it
2-10           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-11     76th Legislature, hereby congratulate Sandra Rushing on being
2-12     inducted into the 1999 El Paso Women's Hall of Fame; and, be it
2-13     further
2-14           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her
2-15     as an expression of the highest regard of the Texas Senate.
