1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 489 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to 1-4 recognize Betty Ligon, who is an inductee into the 1999 El Paso 1-5 Women's Hall of Fame; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Created by the El Paso Commission on Women in 1985, 1-7 the El Paso Women's Hall of Fame is intended to honor notable 1-8 women in the city who have made significant contributions to their 1-9 community; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Selected for the category of the Arts, Betty Ligon 1-11 was nominated because of her accuracy, sincerity, and longevity on 1-12 the arts scene in El Paso; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Over the years, Betty has devoted her personal 1-14 and professional life to chronicling the culture and art of this 1-15 international area; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Celebrating her 75th birthday in 1996, Betty's 1-17 colleagues and friends saluted her three decades of writing 1-18 for art and entertainment; her importance as a central cultural 1-19 figure was underscored by the respect which was paid to her by 1-20 authors, musicians, performers, arts administrators, board members, 1-21 and volunteers who attended the festive gathering; and 1-22 WHEREAS, One who has persevered through many crises, 1-23 Betty Ligon has always met her deadlines and written her articles; 1-24 what she has written has been controversial at times, but she has 2-1 always been true to her instincts; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Betty Ligon has continually nurtured the community 2-3 of arts in El Paso, sometimes literally supporting an artist or 2-4 writer by providing shelter for them; in addition she has been an 2-5 enthusiastic audience member to many friends of all ages whom she 2-6 calls her "kids"; and 2-7 WHEREAS, Not content to be just an observer, Betty has served 2-8 on boards such as the Mission Trail Association, the Opera Company, 2-9 juries such as the Authors at the Pass: Writers Hall of Fame, and 2-10 many more; she has always been a supporter and upholder of the arts; 2-11 now, therefore, be it 2-12 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-13 76th Legislature, hereby congratulate Betty Ligon on being inducted 2-14 into the 1999 El Paso Women's Hall of Fame; and, be it further 2-15 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her 2-16 as an expression of the highest regard of the Texas Senate. 2-17 Shapleigh 2-18 ______________________________________ 2-19 President of the Senate 2-20 I hereby certify that the above 2-21 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-22 on March 25, 1999. 2-23 ______________________________________ 2-24 Secretary of the Senate 2-25 ______________________________________ 2-26 Member, Texas Senate
