 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 495
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to
 1-4     recognize Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church of Austin, Texas,
 1-5     on the grand occasion of its 100th anniversary, which is being
 1-6     celebrated April 11, 1999; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, The Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church has its
 1-8     roots in the small congregation that met regularly in 1899 in the
 1-9     homes of Carrie Walton and Mr. and Mrs. Denmon; the group eventually
1-10     obtained property at Poquito and 22nd Street and organized their
1-11     church; and
1-12           WHEREAS, Nearly a century later, in 1986, the congregation
1-13     outgrew the 22nd Street edifice and moved to a site on 38 1/2 Street;
1-14     in 1994, the church moved to its present location at 5900 Cameron
1-15     Road; and
1-16           WHEREAS, Over the years, the Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist
1-17     Church has ministered faithfully to the spiritual needs of innumerable
1-18     Christians; and
1-19           WHEREAS, Due to the guidance and wise stewardship of its
1-20     pastors, and the outstanding leadership of its current pastor,
1-21     A. W. Anthony Mays, the church has continued to grow and to
1-22     undertake many worthy projects within the community; and
1-23           WHEREAS, Several ministries were added to the church in 1994,
1-24     including a Women's Ministry, Music Ministry, Marriage Ministry,
 2-1     and Youth Ministry; the Mount Sinai Christian Academy now has an
 2-2     enrollment of 115, and the entire church congregation has expanded
 2-3     to 3,000; the church has a 21-class school, two Bible study classes,
 2-4     and a growing scholarship fund; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church has become an
 2-6     invaluable source of strength for its members during their hardships
 2-7     and in times of bereavement; and
 2-8           WHEREAS, The celebration of its 100th anniversary is an
 2-9     expression of the church's enduring commitment to its holy mission
2-10     and its dedication to tradition and unity among Christians; now,
2-11     therefore, be it
2-12           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-13     76th Legislature, hereby extend best wishes to the clergy and
2-14     members of Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church on the jubilant
2-15     occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it further
2-16           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
2-17     church as a token of esteem from the Texas Senate.
