 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 498
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in
 1-4     congratulating Savoy Elementary School, of the Savoy Independent
 1-5     School District, for receiving an award from the Texas Successful
 1-6     Schools Award System; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, Savoy Independent School District schools are
 1-8     among 823 campuses statewide receiving awards for exemplary,
 1-9     recognized, or acceptable performance; these campuses rank in
1-10     the top 25 percent of all campuses in the same comparison group in
1-11     respect to growth on the Texas Learning Index derived from the
1-12     Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS) reading and mathematics
1-13     tests; and
1-14           WHEREAS, The standards for earning an award from the Texas
1-15     Successful Schools Award System are based on gains on the Academic
1-16     Excellence Indicator System; the awards are determined by scores on
1-17     the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills and the drop-out and
1-18     attendance rates; and
1-19           WHEREAS, Savoy Elementary School received an acceptable
1-20     rating on the Texas Education Agency's accountablility system and
1-21     will receive a gift of $966 to be used for the school's academic
1-22     enrichment; and
1-23           WHEREAS, The school earned this award for making
1-24     significant gains on the 1998 TAAS over the previous years;
 2-1     overall the elementary students made gains of 3.2 percent on all
 2-2     tests taken, and disadvantaged students made gains of 12.5 percent
 2-3     in reading and 15 percent in mathematics; and
 2-4           WHEREAS, This honor demonstrates the talent, dedication,
 2-5     and hard work of the students and members of the faculty at
 2-6     Savoy Elementary School; and
 2-7           WHEREAS, The award also reflects the superior leadership
 2-8     of this school's principal, Robert Biggers, and the united efforts
 2-9     of the administrators, teachers, and students to meet the challenges
2-10     required for academic excellence; now, therefore, be it
2-11           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-12     76th Legislature, hereby commend Savoy Elementary School for
2-13     meeting the criteria established for an award from the Texas
2-14     Successful Schools Award System and for bringing honor to the
2-15     school district and to the community; and, be it further
2-16           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-17     Savoy Elementary School as an expression of esteem from the
2-18     Texas Senate.
