 1-5                                 Bruce Angel
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
 1-7     of La Porte in mourning the loss of Bruce Angel, who died
 1-8     March 10, 1999, at the age of 70; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Bruce was born on December 30, 1928, in Livingston,
1-10     the youngest of 10 children; he served his country in the
1-11     United States Army, where he learned to cook; and
1-12           WHEREAS, Bruce and his wife, Reba, first moved to La Porte
1-13     in 1953 with $81 in cash, a car, a baby boy, and a $12,000 bank
1-14     note; the couple bought the Zesty Kup, an ice cream parlor
1-15     situated on the site where Angel's Grill was later located; and
1-16           WHEREAS, Bruce and Reba worked hard at their business, it
1-17     grew, they added more space, and changed the name to Angel's Grill;
1-18     at one point, they had a year in which they earned $8,000, and they
1-19     felt so fortunate that they thought about retiring by age 35; they
1-20     kept on working instead and raised two children, and while they
1-21     worked, they acquired new financial holdings; and
1-22           WHEREAS, Bruce and Reba were partners in every sense;
1-23     they eventually owned a restaurant, a laundry mat, a car wash,
1-24     a reducing salon, apartment projects, real estate investments,
 2-1     service stations, and convenience stores; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, In the 1960s, Bruce became the first person to sell
 2-3     self-service gasoline in Harris County; and
 2-4           WHEREAS, Unknown to most of their friends, Mr. and Mrs. Angel
 2-5     were generous philanthropists who always wanted their philanthropy
 2-6     to be anonymous; they contributed to a number of worthy causes,
 2-7     especially First United Methodist Church of La Porte, where they
 2-8     were members; they also gave to the La Porte Neighborhood Centers;
 2-9     and
2-10           WHEREAS, Beloved in his community, he received the Gus Groos
2-11     Humanitarian Award in 1995; Bruce was a happy man, and his family
2-12     was the center of his universe; and
2-13           WHEREAS, Bruce was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather,
2-14     and he leaves memories which will be treasured always by his family
2-15     and many friends; now, therefore, be it
2-16           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-17     76th Legislature, hereby express sincere condolences to the members
2-18     of his family:  his wife, Reba Angel; his son, David Angel; his
2-19     daughter, Peggy Garrie; his brother, Billy B. Angel; his sister,
2-20     Beulah Goodman; and his four grandchildren; and, be it further
2-21           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
2-22     members of his family, and that when the Senate adjourns this day,
2-23     it do so in memory of Bruce Angel.
