 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 515
 1-3           WHEREAS, Monday and Tuesday, March 29 and 30, 1999, have been
 1-4     selected by the citizens of Wise County as special days to gather
 1-5     at the State Capitol to recognize and celebrate the contributions
 1-6     of Wise County to the heritage of the State of Texas; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, Wise County was created in 1856 and named for
 1-8     United States Senator Henry A. Wise, an early settler of the area
 1-9     who favored the annexation of Texas; and
1-10           WHEREAS, Decatur, selected as a townsite and county seat in
1-11     1856, became an important stop for the Butterfield Overland Mail
1-12     route shortly thereafter; and
1-13           WHEREAS, Still standing on Decatur's town square, the
1-14     Wise County courthouse, built in 1895 of pink limestone, is
1-15     considered a perfect architectural example of its type and era;
1-16     and
1-17           WHEREAS, The Wise County Heritage Museum houses archives and
1-18     mementoes of the county's early history, including Indian artifacts,
1-19     art, and relics; and
1-20           WHEREAS, The county is a leading dairy and cattle region as
1-21     well as a producer of vegetables, cantaloupes, watermelons, pecans,
1-22     and grains; and
1-23           WHEREAS, Well known for its oil and gas production,
1-24     Wise County also is an important source of clay, stone, and
 2-1     gravel; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, Noted for its wonderful recreational areas and
 2-3     natural beauty, Wise County beckons visitors to Lake Bridgeport and
 2-4     Eagle Mountain Lake located in the rugged but scenic county; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, Wise County is justifiably proud of its history,
 2-6     culture, progressive development, and contributions to the heritage
 2-7     of the State of Texas; and
 2-8           WHEREAS, These special days are an appropriate occasion for
 2-9     the Texas Senate to recognize the citizens of Wise County and to
2-10     commend them for their notable endeavors and achievements; now,
2-11     therefore, be it
2-12           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-13     76th Legislature, hereby declare March 29 and 30, 1999, as
2-14     Wise County Days at the State Capitol and join Wise County residents
2-15     as they celebrate their county's greatness; and, be it further
2-16           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
2-17     citizens of Wise County as an expression of the recognition and
2-18     appreciation of the Texas Senate.
