1-1                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 551
 1-2           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is honored to
 1-3     recognize the 1998-1999 Mexia boys basketball team for winning its
 1-4     first ever University Interscholastic League Class 3A championship;
 1-5     and
 1-6           WHEREAS, Upsetting the Seminole Indians 77-71 brought to an
 1-7     end a drought of 31 years for the Mexia Runnin' Black Cats who had
 1-8     not made it to the state finals since 1968; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, A crowd of 12,834 fans were on hand to witness this
1-10     exciting and emotional overtime victory; a game hard fought by a
1-11     team with a fierce fighting spirit and a dream of bringing home the
1-12     state title; and
1-13           WHEREAS, For their valiant efforts and true championship form
1-14     these fine young men, their coaches, their managers, and their
1-15     trainer merit legislative recognition:  J. T. Brown, Rickey Huckaby,
1-16     Sam Chambers, Jesse Kimbrough, Willie Jefferson, Tedrick Mathews,
1-17     Greg Dunn, Freddie Hall, Donavan Smith, Tim Hubbard, John McGilvray,
1-18     James Collins, Bridger Winsor, Demar Chambers, Mikey Guthrie, head
1-19     coach Terrul Henderson, assistant coaches Randy Ewers and
1-20     John Fonteneaux, managers Chase Adams, Cody Bluitt, Wesley Groth,
1-21     and Duke Pittman, and trainer Chris Parks; and
1-22           WHEREAS, These dedicated young men have brought honor to
1-23     themselves, the community of Mexia, and the Runnin' Black Cats;
1-24     their exhibition of perseverance, team unity, and respect for the
 2-1     highest ideals of American sportsmanship should not go unnoticed;
 2-2     now, therefore, be it
 2-3           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 2-4     76th Legislature, hereby commend the Mexia boys basketball team
 2-5     on its championship and extend congratulations to all those involved
 2-6     in this remarkable season; and, be it further
 2-7           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
 2-8     coaches and each of the team players as a token of esteem from the
 2-9     Texas Senate.
