1-1                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 554
 1-2           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in
 1-3     recognizing the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Kaufman, Texas, as it
 1-4     participates in the 100th anniversary of the Veterans of Foreign
 1-5     Wars of the United States; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, The members of Veterans of Foreign Wars in Kaufman
 1-7     are having a luncheon to celebrate their observation of this
 1-8     important anniversary year on Sunday, April 11, 1999; the veterans'
 1-9     posts contribute to their community through valuable service in
1-10     local volunteer projects; and
1-11           WHEREAS, The Veterans of Foreign Wars traces its beginnings
1-12     back to 1899, when some veterans of the Spanish-American War
1-13     returned home in need of medical care and assistance to return to
1-14     their prewar lives; and
1-15           WHEREAS, Veterans of Cuba and the Philippines met separately
1-16     to form organizations that would represent them in their quest for
1-17     medical care and pensions; and
1-18           WHEREAS, By 1914 there were several groups who represented
1-19     veterans across the country, and the need for one all encompassing
1-20     national veterans' organization was readily apparent; and
1-21           WHEREAS, Right before the beginning of World War I, an
1-22     amalgamation of the separate groups took place, and the official
1-23     name was adopted, Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States;
1-24     now, therefore, be it
 2-1           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 2-2     76th Legislature, hereby congratulate the Veterans of Foreign Wars
 2-3     of Kaufman in celebrating the 100th anniversary of the organization;
 2-4     and, be it further
 2-5           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
 2-6     veterans as an expression of the highest regard and esteem of the
 2-7     Texas Senate.
