 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 564
 1-3           WHEREAS, J. W. Hamby of Plainview has long been an
 1-4     outstanding community leader, and his many notable achievements
 1-5     are truly worthy of special recognition; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, A native Texan, Mr. Hamby graduated from
 1-7     Plainview High School in 1942 and served with distinction in the
 1-8     United States Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946 as a pilot, flying
 1-9     B-25, B-26, and A-26 aircraft; and
1-10           WHEREAS, Following his honorable discharge, Mr. Hamby
1-11     sold insurance, irrigation pumps, and farm equipment and managed
1-12     a drive-in cafe and a driving range; in 1954, he founded the
1-13     Hamby Company, a highly successful farm equipment manufacturing
1-14     company responsible for creating bed-sleds, aeration equipment for
1-15     grain storage, component parts for plows, and the four-by-four
1-16     tubular steel "Tool Bar"; and
1-17           WHEREAS, Mr. Hamby currently holds 11 patents on various
1-18     types of farm equipment; his company has greatly benefited the
1-19     City of Plainview, which has had 15 local businesses run by former
1-20     employees of the Hamby Company; and
1-21           WHEREAS, A vital and valued member of Garland Street
1-22     Church of Christ, this devout Christian has served the congregation
1-23     as a teacher, deacon, and elder and has been active in missionary
1-24     support; he was also instrumental in planning and creating the
 2-1     Sunset School of Preaching in Lubbock; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, In 1973, Mr. Hamby was elected to the Lubbock
 2-3     Christian University Board of Trustees, an organization he has
 2-4     continued to serve for the past 26 years, including 20 as vice
 2-5     chairman; he has also donated his time and talents to the boards of
 2-6     the LCC Investment Corporation, the LCU Endowment Foundation, and
 2-7     the LCU Institute of Water Research; and
 2-8           WHEREAS, Together with his wife and business partner,
 2-9     the late Dot Hamby, he shared a lengthy and loving union that was
2-10     blessed with four children, Larry, Katrina, Arlana, and Delisa, and
2-11     15 grandchildren, all of whom are a source of great pride to this
2-12     esteemed gentleman; and
2-13           WHEREAS, A role model in his church and community,
2-14     Mr. Hamby has a heart of gold and truly exemplifies the LCU motto;
2-15     not just a director or chief executive officer, he gets personally
2-16     involved in the lives of people in need and does not hesitate to
2-17     roll up his sleeves to help others by visiting, encouraging, and
2-18     counseling those less fortunate; and
2-19           WHEREAS, J. W. Hamby has distinguished himself as a man
2-20     of ability and integrity, and it is indeed fitting at this time
2-21     to pay tribute to him for his significant accomplishments as a
2-22     businessman and civic leader; now, therefore, be it
2-23           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-24     76th Legislature, hereby honor J. W. Hamby for his many years of
2-25     hard work and dedication to others and extend to him sincere best
2-26     wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further
 3-1           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
 3-2     prepared for Mr. Hamby as an expression of high regard by the
 3-3     Texas Senate.
