1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 583 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is honored to 1-4 recognize Dr. Edith Irby Jones as the keynote speaker for the 1-5 20th Annual Intercultural Communications Conference held 1-6 April 8-9, 1999, at Texas Southern University; and 1-7 WHEREAS, As a widely renowned Internal Medicine specialist, 1-8 humanitarian, and publicist, Dr. Jones addressed the Department of 1-9 Communications 1999 conference theme of "Traditional African Health 1-10 and Healing Practices: Perceptions of and Treatment for Physical, 1-11 Emotional and Spiritual Wellness"; and 1-12 WHEREAS, As a 1952 graduate of the University of Arkansas 1-13 School of Medicine, she was the first black ever to be admitted 1-14 and, in acknowledgment of this, a ceremony was held in 1985 to 1-15 unveil her portrait that hangs in the school entrance hall today; 1-16 and 1-17 WHEREAS, She is Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine 1-18 at Baylor College of Medicine and at The University of Texas 1-19 School of Medicine in Houston; she sits on the editorial boards 1-20 of Black Health and Urban Medicine and the Journal of Health Care 1-21 for the Poor and Underserved; and 1-22 WHEREAS, The varied and notable achievements of this 1-23 distinguished doctor have brought her countless accolades; she 1-24 was the first female president of the National Medical Association 2-1 in its 91-year history; awarded the Doctor of Humane Letters from 2-2 Missouri Valley College, Maryland-Holmes College, Lindenwood 2-3 College, and Knoxville College; in 1987 she was inducted into 2-4 the National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame; and 2-5 WHEREAS, The City of Houston honored her in 1993 for her 2-6 service to the poor, aged, minorities, and underserved, and in 2-7 September of 1995 an Edith Irby Jones Recognition Day was held; 2-8 she was also given special recognition in 1996 by the Houston 2-9 Parks Department for her promotion of positive life styles; and 2-10 WHEREAS, Her exceptional work and dedication did not go 2-11 unnoticed by her colleagues, Dr. Jones is also the recipient of 2-12 numerous awards in her field; she was named Internist of the Year 2-13 in 1988 by the American Society of Internal Medicine and was 2-14 recognized by them again in 1992 for her leadership; the 2-15 Association of Black Cardiologists presented her with a special 2-16 award for Contributions to Organized Medicine; and 2-17 WHEREAS, This esteemed internist also offers her wisdom and 2-18 time as a member of various boards, councils, and task forces; 2-19 she is a proven leader who has devoted her talents and energies 2-20 to a wide range of causes; now, therefore, be it 2-21 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-22 76th Legislature, hereby express its deepest gratitude to 2-23 Dr. Edith Irby Jones for her outstanding contributions and 2-24 exceptional accomplishments; and, be it further 2-25 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-26 Dr. Jones as an expression of the appreciation and high regard 3-1 of the Texas Senate. 3-2 Ellis 3-3 ______________________________________ 3-4 President of the Senate 3-5 I hereby certify that the above 3-6 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-7 on April 9, 1999. 3-8 ______________________________________ 3-9 Secretary of the Senate 3-10 ______________________________________ 3-11 Member, Texas Senate
