 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 596
 1-3           WHEREAS, April 18 through 24, 1999, is National Volunteer
 1-4     Week, and the Senate of the State of Texas takes great pleasure
 1-5     in recognizing all those citizens who contribute their spare
 1-6     time to help their fellowman; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, The Medical Center of Lewisville is one of the
 1-8     institutions in Texas whose volunteer staff is worthy of
 1-9     commendation; the Medical Center of Lewisville was founded 23
1-10     years ago, and it now serves the greater Lewisville-Flower Mound
1-11     area; and
1-12           WHEREAS, Since its establishment, the hospital has grown to a
1-13     large facility with an admission rate of 6,600 in 1998 and surgeries
1-14     numbering more than 8,600; and
1-15           WHEREAS, During the same year, the medical center had almost
1-16     30,000 emergency room visits and over 24,000 outpatient visits; and
1-17           WHEREAS, There are 65 full-time volunteers who give about
1-18     17,000 hours a year to the medical center; some of these dedicated
1-19     people donate up to 16 hours a week, some have logged over a total
1-20     of 10,000 hours, and several have been with the program for over
1-21     20 years; and
1-22           WHEREAS, Some of those who volunteer are professional
1-23     people, university students planning a medical career, retirees
1-24     from careers ranging from bankers to teachers to engineers, and
 2-1     homemakers; the ages of these selfless men and women range from
 2-2     18 to 83 years; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, An additional 30 high school students assist in the
 2-4     summer and perform the same duties as the adult volunteers; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, The volunteers work as staff support, man the
 2-6     information desks 10 hours a day, deliver flowers, mail, and
 2-7     newspapers, volunteer in the Intensive Care Unit, the Emergency
 2-8     Room, and in the Women's and Children's Services; and
 2-9           WHEREAS, A special annual recognition dinner is planned
2-10     for April 22, 1999, to salute the volunteers who have provided
2-11     outstanding help in the hospital in many ways; and
2-12           WHEREAS, The theme of Volunteer Recognition Week for this
2-13     year will be "The Magic of Volunteering"; it will show what wonders
2-14     volunteers can perform and underscore the many achievements of the
2-15     volunteers who work at the Medical Center of Lewisville; now,
2-16     therefore, be it
2-17           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-18     76th Legislature, hereby commend the many volunteers of the Medical
2-19     Center of Lewisville at their recognition dinner on April 22, 1999;
2-20     and, be it further
2-21           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an
2-22     expression of the high regard of the Texas Senate.
