1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 644 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in 1-3 recognizing Coach Robert Hughes on his 39 years of outstanding 1-4 service as a basketball coach at Dunbar High School of the 1-5 Fort Worth Independent School District; and 1-6 WHEREAS, A legendary figure among high school coaches, 1-7 Bob Hughes has been featured in Sports Illustrated, has appeared 1-8 on CNN television, and has had the opportunity to coach a basketball 1-9 team in Reggio, Italy; and 1-10 WHEREAS, A member of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, 1-11 Coach Hughes has won more basketball games than any other coach in 1-12 the nation, with 1,121 wins and only 190 losses; and 1-13 WHEREAS, His exceptional record has included earning 1-14 19 district basketball championships, three state basketball 1-15 championships, and the title of Coach of the Year 22 times; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Throughout his highly successful career, he has 1-17 coached high school boys from all socio-economic backgrounds and 1-18 has served as a surrogate father to many; some of his players have 1-19 carved their own impressive careers as one of his students became 1-20 a professor at Harvard University and one became a National 1-21 Basketball Association player; and 1-22 WHEREAS, During his tenure, Coach Hughes has consistently 1-23 demonstrated his dedication to his students and to his profession, 1-24 and his humility, his commitment to excellence, and his high moral 2-1 principles have been inspirational to all who participate in 2-2 competitive sports; now, therefore, be it 2-3 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-4 76th Legislature, hereby commend Coach Robert Hughes on his 2-5 remarkable career and extend to him best wishes for the future; 2-6 and, be it further 2-7 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-8 Coach Hughes as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. 2-9 Moncrief 2-10 ______________________________________ 2-11 President of the Senate 2-12 I hereby certify that the above 2-13 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-14 on April 14, 1999. 2-15 ______________________________________ 2-16 Secretary of the Senate 2-17 ______________________________________ 2-18 Member, Texas Senate
