1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 673 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great 1-4 pleasure in recognizing Adina Campbell, who won the 1999 1-5 Governor's Volunteer Award; and 1-6 WHEREAS, When she was quite young, Adina went with her 1-7 mother to help with her volunteer job at the Red Cross in 1-8 Germany; from this experience, Adina learned about the power 1-9 of volunteerism; and 1-10 WHEREAS, At the end of her freshman year at the El Paso 1-11 Silva Magnet High School, Adina established the Silva Magnet 1-12 Octagon Junior Optimist Club and found 87 students who were 1-13 interested in serving their community; during the first year, 1-14 the members compiled 9,045 volunteer hours; and 1-15 WHEREAS, The school is located in a very poor area of 1-16 El Paso; Adina Campbell understood the lack of adequate medical 1-17 information and treatment and organized an Annual Health Fair in 1-18 five weeks; the Health Fair is in its third year; the health and 1-19 welfare of 350 families were improved, thereby improving the 1-20 lives of the citizens; and 1-21 WHEREAS, Adina has offered the services of the Octagon 1-22 Junior Optimist Club to about 20 projects per year; some of the 1-23 projects include helping to build a home through Habitat for 1-24 Humanity, peer tutoring, taking underprivileged teenagers to the 2-1 theater, collecting clothes, toys, and food for the Child Crisis 2-2 Center and Battered Women's Center, and visiting the elderly in 2-3 nursing homes; and 2-4 WHEREAS, With the students of the magnet school being 2-5 extremely competitive, Adina decided that creating a better 2-6 atmosphere would help the overall feeling in the school; she 2-7 initiated the Random Acts of Kindness campaign for the Silva 2-8 PTSA; people from all clubs reward students who are observed 2-9 being considerate to others, and the program has had a ripple 2-10 effect on the community; and 2-11 WHEREAS, Noting the need among poorer students to prepare 2-12 to take the SATs and do well so that their futures can include 2-13 higher education, Adina convinced a college professor to donate 2-14 his time to prepare approximately 10 students a week for one 2-15 semester to take the SATs; the plan was successful; and 2-16 WHEREAS, Adina Campbell initiated a unique program in 1996 2-17 at the magnet school which is called Adopt a Freshman; when a 2-18 pupil comes to the magnet school, he leaves his friends from his 2-19 home school, and the program allows approximately 300 junior and 2-20 senior students to mentor the new freshmen; and 2-21 WHEREAS, When Adina visited the Andrews Nursing Home, she 2-22 felt that the institution should feel more like a home, so she 2-23 began Project Cozy; she solicited businesses and relatives for 2-24 funds and materials; with donations and volunteers, she and her 2-25 group put up wallpaper, painted, and decorated the nursing home's 2-26 common areas; the residents now find the atmosphere much more 3-1 congenial; and 3-2 WHEREAS, The value and happiness that Adina Campbell has 3-3 brought to hundreds of people in her community, in El Paso, and 3-4 in the State of Texas through her devotion to volunteer work is 3-5 incalculable, and she is certainly deserving of legislative 3-6 recognition; now, therefore, be it 3-7 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-8 76th Legislature, hereby commend and applaud the generous 3-9 volunteer work of Adina Campbell and congratulate her for 3-10 winning the 1999 Governor's Volunteer Award; and, be it further 3-11 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 3-12 her as an expression of the highest esteem and regard of the 3-13 Texas Senate. 3-14 Shapleigh 3-15 ______________________________________ 3-16 President of the Senate 3-17 I hereby certify that the above 3-18 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-19 on April 19, 1999. 3-20 ______________________________________ 3-21 Secretary of the Senate 3-22 ______________________________________ 3-23 Member, Texas Senate
