1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 683 1-3 WHEREAS, The Texas Senate takes great pride in welcoming 1-4 the League of United Latin American Citizens' (LULAC) Council 1-5 No. 1 Feria de las Flores contestants to the State Capitol on 1-6 April 20, 1999; and 1-7 WHEREAS, This is the 40th year that the Feria de las Flores 1-8 has been sponsored by LULAC Council Number One; the first Feria 1-9 was created and organized by member Joe Flores from Corpus Christi 1-10 in 1959, and Ms. Abby Pina was crowned the first Feria de las Flores 1-11 Queen; and 1-12 WHEREAS, Council Number One raises money for scholarships 1-13 for qualified college-bound students, and to date, through the 1-14 generosity of South Texas businesses, the Council has disseminated 1-15 more than $900,000 in scholarship money to the winners of the Feria; 1-16 and 1-17 WHEREAS, The participants in the contest compete in six 1-18 areas: on-stage question, dance routine, costume, poise, 1-19 personality, and beauty; the contest is intended as a celebration 1-20 of the heritage of Mexican American citizens and includes dance, 1-21 music, and dress typical of the different regions south of the 1-22 border; and 1-23 WHEREAS, The charming and talented young women who 1-24 are competing in the 40th Feria de las Flores are Rubiana Garcia, 2-1 Marissa Romero, Christina Alfaro, Ashley Ramirez, Selena Peronis, 2-2 Kristina Longoria, Gina Gonzalez, Larissa Mercado, Marisol Trevino, 2-3 Selina Lopez, Patricia Monreal, Gina Munoz, Vicki Guerra, 2-4 Sarah Huerta, Amy Guerrero, Melissa Briseno, Araceli Saenz, 2-5 Sabrina Calderon, Brandy Garcia, Rosalia Chapa, and Marisa Mejia; and 2-6 WHEREAS, The Feria de las Flores demonstrates community spirit 2-7 and shows the desire to furnish educational opportunities for the 2-8 young people of South Texas; now, therefore, be it 2-9 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-10 76th Legislature, hereby commend the goals of the LULAC Council 2-11 Number One for sponsoring the 40th annual Feria de las Flores and 2-12 extend greetings to this distinguished group; and, be it further 2-13 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an 2-14 expression of the highest regard and esteem of the Texas Senate. 2-15 Truan 2-16 Armbrister Gallegos Nixon 2-17 Barrientos Harris Ogden 2-18 Bernsen Haywood Ratliff 2-19 Bivins Jackson Shapiro 2-20 Brown Lindsay Shapleigh 2-21 Cain Lucio Sibley 2-22 Carona Luna Wentworth 2-23 Duncan Madla West 2-24 Ellis Moncrief Whitmire 2-25 Fraser Nelson Zaffirini 2-26 Perry, President of the Senate 2-27 ______________________________________ 2-28 President of the Senate 2-29 I hereby certify that the above 2-30 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-31 on April 19, 1999. 2-32 ______________________________________ 2-33 Secretary of the Senate 2-34 ______________________________________ 2-35 Dean of the Senate
