1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 690 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure in 1-4 recognizing Dr. Joaquin Gonzalez Cigarroa, Jr., of Laredo, who was 1-5 recently named Humanitarian of the Year; and 1-6 WHEREAS, The valedictorian of Martin High School in 1941, he 1-7 attended The University of Texas from 1941 through 1943 and went 1-8 on to Harvard Medical School, where he graduated cum laude in 1947; 1-9 and 1-10 WHEREAS, This distinguished physician continued his medical 1-11 studies as an intern and resident in Boston and Chicago, and was 1-12 a Harvard Teaching Fellow from 1948 to 1951; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Dr. Cigarroa joined the Walter Reed Army Medical 1-14 Center as a member of the Hepatitis Research Team from 1952 through 1-15 1953, went into private practice in internal medicine and cardiology 1-16 in 1954, and has continued his practice to the present; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Dedicated and talented, Dr. Cigarroa has donated 1-18 his time and effort to the Coordinating Board of Texas Colleges 1-19 and Universities, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, 1-20 the Board of Directors of Laredo National Bank, and the Senate 1-21 Welfare Reform Committee; and 1-22 WHEREAS, A lifetime member of the Laredo University of 1-23 Texas Exes, this talented gentleman was Director of the Texas 1-24 Medical Foundation in 1997, on the Board of Directors of the 2-1 Laredo Independent School District, and on the Texas Commission 2-2 on Higher Education; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Active in many professional groups, this outstanding 2-4 physician was president of the Webb, Zapata, and Jim Hogg Counties 2-5 Medical Society, is a member of the Texas Physicians Advisory 2-6 Committee of M. D. Anderson Hospital, and a charter member of the 2-7 Texas Academy of Internal Medicine; and 2-8 WHEREAS, A man who has given much to society, he has received 2-9 many honors including being Mr. South Texas in 1981, receiving the 2-10 Gibson D. Lewis Cancer Control Award for Physicians, being selected 2-11 the Laredo Times Laredoan of the Year, and being chosen a Laureate 2-12 of the Laredo Business Hall of Fame in 1996; now, therefore, be it 2-13 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-14 76th Legislature, hereby congratulate this dedicated medical man 2-15 on his selection as Humanitarian of the Year; and, be it further 2-16 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-17 Dr. Joaquin Gonzalez Cigarroa, Jr., as an expression of the highest 2-18 regard of the Texas Senate. 2-19 Zaffirini 2-20 ______________________________________ 2-21 President of the Senate 2-22 I hereby certify that the above 2-23 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-24 on April 20, 1999. 2-25 ______________________________________ 2-26 Secretary of the Senate 2-27 ______________________________________ 2-28 Member, Texas Senate
