1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 693 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great pride 1-4 in recognizing John Herschel Glenn, Jr., an outstanding American 1-5 citizen and one of our country's foremost heroes; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Born July 18, 1921, in Cambridge, Ohio, John Glenn 1-7 earned a bachelor of science degree in engineering from Muskingum 1-8 College and was later awarded honorary doctoral degrees from nine 1-9 colleges and universities; and 1-10 WHEREAS, He joined the United States Marines and flew 59 1-11 combat missions during World War II; he later served as an 1-12 instructor in advanced flight training in Corpus Christi, Texas, 1-13 and from 1948 to 1958, his accomplishments included flying 63 1-14 missions in Korea, attending Test Pilot School at a Naval Air 1-15 Test Center in Maryland, and setting a transcontinental speed 1-16 record from Los Angeles to New York in 1957 while serving as a 1-17 project officer of the F8U Crusader; and 1-18 WHEREAS, John Glenn was selected as a Project Mercury 1-19 astronaut and was assigned to the NASA Space Task Group at 1-20 Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, in April, 1959; the 1-21 Space Task Group was moved to Houston and became part of the NASA 1-22 Manned Spacecraft Center in 1962, and John Glenn became a national 1-23 hero when on February 20 of that year, he piloted the Mercury 1-24 "Friendship 7" spacecraft on the first manned orbital mission for 2-1 the United States; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Elected in November, 1974, John Glenn had a highly 2-3 successful career in the United States Senate; he became the 2-4 focus of the national spotlight last fall when he embarked on 2-5 a nine-day mission on the STS-95 Discovery as part of the 2-6 investigation into space flight and the aging process; the mission 2-7 was accomplished in 134 Earth orbits, travelling 3.6 million miles 2-8 in 213 hours and 44 minutes; and 2-9 WHEREAS, A legendary figure whose remarkable accomplishments 2-10 inspire awe in every American, John Glenn has devoted his life to 2-11 serving his country, and he has made a profound imprint on our 2-12 nation and the future of space exploration; now, therefore, be it 2-13 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-14 76th Legislature, hereby commend John Herschel Glenn, Jr., on 2-15 his outstanding contributions to our country and pay tribute 2-16 to him on April 22, 1999, for his exceptional achievements; and, 2-17 be it further 2-18 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-19 John Glenn as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. 2-20 Brown, Jackson 2-21 ______________________________________ 2-22 President of the Senate 2-23 I hereby certify that the above 2-24 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-25 on April 21, 1999. 2-26 ______________________________________ 2-27 Secretary of the Senate 2-28 ______________________________________ 2-29 Member, Texas Senate 2-30 ______________________________________ 2-31 Member, Texas Senate
