1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 709 1-3 In Memory 1-4 of 1-5 John C. Bustin 1-6 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the 1-7 family and friends of John C. Bustin in mourning the death of 1-8 this beloved Austin citizen on April 8, 1998; and 1-9 WHEREAS, In a fitting tribute to his memory his family 1-10 made a generous contribution to The Professional Touring 1-11 Entertainment Archive at The University of Texas at Austin; 1-12 in establishing The John C. Bustin Collection at the university's 1-13 Center for American History, the family has provided an invaluable 1-14 primary resource for Texas and the nation's students; and 1-15 WHEREAS, A native Austinite, John C. Bustin became one of 1-16 the city's preeminent citizens; at an early age, he learned to 1-17 love the arts, and they became a lifelong passion; when John 1-18 died in 1998, at the age of 70, he had not only established a 1-19 brilliant career as a savvy entertainment critic, but he had 1-20 earned the respect and love of his community and colleagues; and 1-21 WHEREAS, A third-generation Austinite, Mr. Bustin began 1-22 his notable career as amusements editor for The Daily Texan at 1-23 The University of Texas; he then served as entertainment director 1-24 at the United States Army's Camp Lee in Virginia; upon returning 2-1 home, he earned a position as the Austin American-Statesman's 2-2 amusements editor, where he developed the newspaper's first weekend 2-3 magazine, Show World; the last paper he formally affiliated 2-4 himself with was the Austin Citizen; and 2-5 WHEREAS, Over the course of his career, John Bustin penned 2-6 countless reviews of both Austin's arts scene and the nation's 2-7 cultural happenings; his discerning, droll prose earned him the 2-8 loyalty of local readers and attracted the attention of the 2-9 national and international press; and 2-10 WHEREAS, With Mr. Bustin's celebrity came offers to work 2-11 for other city newspapers, but he remained loyal to his beloved 2-12 Austin; his steadfastness to local arts resulted in his serving 2-13 on boards and advisory councils of the city's leading cultural 2-14 institutions, some of which include Ballet Austin, Austin Symphony 2-15 Orchestra, Austin Choral Union, Austin Circle of Theaters, Capitol 2-16 City Playhouse, Zachary Scott Theater Center, and KUT-FM; and 2-17 WHEREAS, The John C. Bustin Collection consists of 2-18 more than 3,300 phonograph records and all of the newspaper 2-19 columns he ever wrote; the collection also includes hundreds 2-20 of playbills, press kits, photographs, films, and memorabilia; 2-21 priceless documents, such as Mr. Bustin's personal interview 2-22 notes with Hollywood elites like Woody Allen, Alfred Hitchcock, 2-23 William Holden, and Robert Mitchum, and letters from presidents 2-24 and film stars, including Lyndon Johnson and Joan Crawford, are 2-25 also part of the collection; and 2-26 WHEREAS, The University of Texas is proud to house the 3-1 collection of one of its most esteemed alumni; John Bustin was a 3-2 treasure to Austin and to the university; now, therefore, be it 3-3 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-4 76th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the 3-5 members of his family: his wife, Roselyn; his son, Greg; and 3-6 his daughter, Laura; and, be it further 3-7 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 3-8 the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy 3-9 from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, 3-10 it do so in memory of John C.
