1-1                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 712
 1-2           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
 1-3     of Plano in declaring the first week of May as Brain Tumor Awareness
 1-4     Week; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, Each year, one million people in the United States
 1-6     are diagnosed with a primary or metastatic brain tumor; brain tumors
 1-7     are the second leading cause of cancer deaths for children and the
 1-8     third leading cause of cancer deaths in young adults up to the age
 1-9     of 34; and
1-10           WHEREAS, Located at the control center for thought, emotion,
1-11     and movement, a brain tumor affects an individual's physical and
1-12     cognitive abilities and can be life-changing and devastating for
1-13     the patients and their families; and
1-14           WHEREAS, Often people affected with brain tumors face their
1-15     difficulties alone or with little support; a North Texas brain
1-16     tumor support group, Greymatters, has been founded to help provide
1-17     emotional and logistical support to patients and their families;
1-18     and
1-19           WHEREAS, In Plano, Maria C. Smith and the Greymatters
1-20     support group have joined together to host a Brain Tumor Awareness
1-21     Candlelight Rally on Saturday, May 8, 1999, in honor of Maria's
1-22     mother and the thousands of people throughout the world who have
1-23     been diagnosed with brain tumors; and
1-24           WHEREAS, The mayor of Plano is declaring the first week of
 2-1     May as Brain Tumor Awareness Week, and the citizens participating
 2-2     in the rally are hoping to increase awareness of the existence of
 2-3     brain tumor support groups and provide the public with a better
 2-4     understanding of this debilitating condition; now, therefore, be it
 2-5           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 2-6     76th Legislature, hereby commend the people of Plano who are
 2-7     sponsoring and participating in the Brain Tumor Awareness
 2-8     Candlelight Rally and encourage all Texans to recognize the first
 2-9     week in May as Brain Tumor Awareness Week; and, be it further
2-10           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-11     Maria C. Smith and the Greymatters support group as an expression
2-12     of encouragement from the Texas Senate.
