 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 723
 1-3           WHEREAS, Texas is internationally known as one of
 1-4     the world's preeminent centers of space exploration, and
 1-5     the aerospace industry has established itself as an integral
 1-6     aspect of the history, economy, and culture of the state; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, In 1961 President John F. Kennedy confronted his
 1-8     fellow Americans with the challenge of landing a human being on
 1-9     the moon before the decade's end, and the nation's imagination was
1-10     captured by the sweep and daring of this ambitious venture; and
1-11           WHEREAS, Eight years later, astronaut Neil Armstrong became
1-12     the first man to walk the surface of the moon, and this historic
1-13     achievement was eloquent testimony to the steadfast dedication and
1-14     remarkable skill of the men and women of the National Aeronautics
1-15     and Space Administration (NASA); and
1-16           WHEREAS, Since that time, Americans have continued to
1-17     explore outer space, testing the limits of human possibility even
1-18     as they make immeasurable contributions to our understanding of
1-19     the universe, and NASA's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston
1-20     has remained at the forefront of this essential endeavor; and
1-21           WHEREAS, A vital element of the Lone Star State's stature as
1-22     an international business mecca, the aerospace industry has also
1-23     been responsible for a number of the technological advances that
1-24     have shaped modern civilization and enriched our lives; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, The history of modern Texas is inextricably entwined
 2-2     with that of the aerospace industry, and it is indeed fitting at
 2-3     this time to recognize this crucial component of the state's
 2-4     security and prosperity; now, therefore, be it
 2-5           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 76th Texas Legislature
 2-6     hereby recognize April 18 through 24, 1999, as Texas Space
 2-7     and Technology Week and extend to all those involved in the
 2-8     aerospace industry sincere best wishes for continued success in
 2-9     the years to come.
