 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 725
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Texas Senate is proud to honor Clyde Drexler
 1-4     for his dedication to his alma mater and his loyalty to the
 1-5     City of Houston; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, A highly recruited high school player at
 1-7     Houston Ross Sterling, Mr. Drexler pursued his collegiate career
 1-8     in his hometown when he joined the University of Houston Cougars
 1-9     and became the highest flyer in "Phi Slamma Jamma," Texas' tallest
1-10     fraternity; and
1-11           WHEREAS, Nicknamed Clyde "The Glide" for his silky-smooth,
1-12     acrobatic moves to the hoop, Mr. Drexler led the Cougars to two
1-13     Final Four appearances in 1982 and 1983 and earned individual
1-14     distinction as a first team All-American and the United States
1-15     Basketball Writer's Association District VI Player of the Year in
1-16     1983; and
1-17           WHEREAS, Mr. Drexler amassed a number of records while at
1-18     the University of Houston and remains the school's all-time career
1-19     steal leader with 268 steals; in addition, he is the only Cougar
1-20     ever to accumulate 1,000 points, 900 rebounds, 300 assists, and
1-21     250 steals; and
1-22           WHEREAS, The 14th player taken in the 1983 National
1-23     Basketball Association draft, he joined the Portland Trailblazers
1-24     and quickly became one of the league's dominant forces; over
 2-1     the next 15 seasons he was selected to 10 National Basketball
 2-2     Association All-Star teams and in 1992 he was named All-NBA First
 2-3     Team and was runner-up for the National Basketball Association's
 2-4     most valuable player award; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, Although he carried the Trailblazers to the
 2-6     NBA Finals in 1990 and 1992, Mr. Drexler did not claim the coveted
 2-7     championship ring until he returned to Houston to join the Rockets;
 2-8     together with former Cougar teammate Hakeem "The Dream" Olajuwon,
 2-9     Drexler helped the Rockets claim their second consecutive National
2-10     Basketball Association title in 1995; and
2-11           WHEREAS, Retiring from the Rockets in 1998, Clyde
2-12     "The Glide" completed his storied NBA career as the league's 17th
2-13     all-time scorer and was fourth all-time in steals; he also joined
2-14     legendary hoops heroes Oscar Robertson and John Havlicek as the
2-15     only National Basketball Association players to amass 20,000 points,
2-16     6,000 rebounds, and 6,000 assists in their careers; and
2-17           WHEREAS, Mr. Drexler's rightful place in the pantheon of
2-18     basketball superstars was assured when he was named one of the
2-19     National Basketball Association's 50 greatest players, and he was
2-20     also selected to represent his country as a member of America's
2-21     "Dream Team" at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain; and
2-22           WHEREAS, On completing his years as a professional
2-23     player, he became the head basketball coach at his alma mater,
2-24     and under his able leadership the Houston Cougars will no doubt
2-25     emerge as one of college basketball's elite teams; and
2-26           WHEREAS, By returning to Houston to share the fruits of
 3-1     his success with the community where his athletic career began,
 3-2     Mr. Drexler has set an inspirational example that has made his
 3-3     fellow Texans proud; and
 3-4           WHEREAS, Clyde Drexler has achieved a level of success in
 3-5     the sport of basketball to which all may aspire but that only a
 3-6     select few will attain, and it is indeed appropriate that he be
 3-7     honored for his extraordinary contributions at this time; now,
 3-8     therefore, be it
 3-9           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
3-10     76th Texas Legislature, hereby commend Clyde Drexler for his
3-11     decision to coach at the University of Houston and extend to him
3-12     sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be
3-13     it further
3-14           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
3-15     prepared for Mr. Drexler as an expression of highest regard from
3-16     the Texas Senate.
