 1-3                                  In Memory
 1-4                                     of
 1-5                               Raul S. Murguia
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
 1-7     citizens of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Raul S. Murguia,
 1-8     who died April 10, 1999, at the age of 60; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Born in 1938, he joined the Society of Mary with
1-10     the intention of becoming a Marianist Brother after his freshman
1-11     year of high school; he received an undergraduate degree from
1-12     Saint Mary's University and a master's in English from Saint Louis
1-13     University; and
1-14           WHEREAS, After deciding to leave the brotherhood, this
1-15     highly respected educator returned to his native city in 1967
1-16     and joined the faculty of San Antonio College; he chaired numerous
1-17     committees and was actively involved with the Faculty Senate; and
1-18           WHEREAS, Admired for his devotion to his profession and his
1-19     students, he was selected in 1983 to direct the High Technology
1-20     High School magnet program for gifted mathematics and science high
1-21     school students, a position he held until 1990; and
1-22           WHEREAS, In addition to his professional responsibilities,
1-23     Mr. Murguia took great interest in civic organizations devoted to
1-24     the betterment of San Antonio:  he served on the Mayor's Task Force
 2-1     on Education, the San Antonio Industrial Development Authority, the
 2-2     Press Community Service Center, the United Way, the King William
 2-3     Association, and the Saint Cecilia's Parish Council; and
 2-4           WHEREAS, His wise counsel and sound judgment will be
 2-5     deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him and
 2-6     sharing his life; now, therefore, be it
 2-7           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 2-8     76th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
 2-9     members of his family:  his wife, Mary Caroline Walsh Murguia;
2-10     his children, Mary Louise, Raul, Thomas, and Benjamin; and his
2-11     three granddaughters; and, be it further
2-12           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-13     the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy
2-14     from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day,
2-15     it do so in memory of Raul S. Murguia.
