1-1                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 745
 1-2           WHEREAS, The Internet has become an increasingly important
 1-3     force in the economy of the United States and Texas, bringing
 1-4     revolutionary change to our communications and commerce; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, In 1996, the Internet and associated high-tech
 1-6     industry generated more than 343,000 jobs with a total payroll
 1-7     estimated at $17.2 billion in Texas, making those related business
 1-8     ventures the number one employer in the state; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, The Internet and its growth will have profound
1-10     implications on the future of Texas and its people, transcending
1-11     traditional technology development and marketplace impacts; and
1-12           WHEREAS, The American Legislative Exchange Council and the
1-13     United States Internet Council are jointly sponsoring an Internet
1-14     Workshop at the DoubleTree Guest Suites in Austin on April 27 and
1-15     28 for members of the Texas Legislature to examine and discuss
1-16     public policy issues and concerns surrounding this revolutionary
1-17     technology; and
1-18           WHEREAS, A panel of experts from throughout the nation will
1-19     come to Austin to share the latest advancements on this dynamic new
1-20     frontier, including contemporary developments in other states; and
1-21           WHEREAS, Texas faces numerous issues related to the Internet,
1-22     such as security encryption, electronic authorization, taxation,
1-23     privacy, and viruses; and
1-24           WHEREAS, All members of the legislature, as well as interested
 2-1     parties from the private sector, are urged to take advantage of this
 2-2     unique opportunity and be in attendance for these workshops on the
 2-3     afternoon of April 27 and the morning of April 28; now, therefore,
 2-4     be it
 2-5           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 2-6     76th Legislature, hereby recognize April 26-30, 1999, as Texas
 2-7     Internet Week and encourage all Texans to learn more about this
 2-8     pervasive new force for the future of our state.
