 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 747
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure in
 1-4     congratulating Carl Rice Embrey of San Antonio on the honor of his
 1-5     being named the Texas State Artist for 1998-1999 in two-dimensional
 1-6     media; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, Mr. Embrey's art depicts the fields, trees, and
 1-8     houses that surround his ancestral home in Hamilton, Texas, a small
 1-9     town with a population of only 2,825 people; and
1-10           WHEREAS, His artistry creates landscapes in subtle tones of
1-11     brown, gold, and red that are reminiscent of Andrew Wyeth in their
1-12     style of realism; and
1-13           WHEREAS, Mr. Embrey's feel for the land of his childhood
1-14     probably resulted, in part, from his first instruction in art
1-15     which came when he was a boy and his Aunt Edith sat with him on
1-16     her front porch and they literally drew what they saw from that
1-17     vantage point; and
1-18           WHEREAS, Despite his enrolling at The University of Texas
1-19     in the school of engineering, Mr. Embrey's desire to become an
1-20     artist asserted itself, and he received his formal art training
1-21     there instead, receiving both his bachelor of fine arts and his
1-22     master of fine arts degrees from The University of Texas; and
1-23           WHEREAS, Although Mr. Embrey moved to San Antonio to teach
1-24     20 hours a week at the San Antonio Art Institute after completing
 2-1     his graduate degrees, the subject for his future artistic endeavors
 2-2     once again asserted itself from his memory in the form of his
 2-3     vision of Hamilton, Texas, and his Aunt Edith's tutelage; and
 2-4           WHEREAS, His depiction of the everyday sights around this
 2-5     Central Texas town are usually devoid of the people who populate
 2-6     the area, but, nevertheless, his paintings evoke a sense of his
 2-7     feeling for the land that remains timeless and yet haunting in
 2-8     its detailed simplicity; and
 2-9           WHEREAS, Mr. Embrey's landscapes of his Central Texas
2-10     hometown reflect a love for the land that is part of our Texas
2-11     heritage; now, therefore, be it
2-12           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-13     76th Legislature, hereby extend congratulations to Carl Rice Embrey
2-14     for being named the Texas State Artist for 1998-1999 in
2-15     two-dimensional media; and, be it further
2-16           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-17     Mr. Embrey as an expression of the gratitude and high regard of the
2-18     Texas Senate.
