1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 748 1-2 WHEREAS, Ernesto Pedregon Martinez was selected as the 1-3 Texas State Artist for two-dimensional works for the year of 1-4 1997-1998, and the Texas Senate is pleased to recognize him; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Born and raised in the poor barrios of South El Paso, 1-6 Ernesto Martinez understands the everyday struggles of the Mexican 1-7 people, the focus of his work; he is a self-taught artist and 1-8 muralist; and 1-9 WHEREAS, One who valiantly served our country during 1-10 World War II, Mr. Martinez served with General Terry Allen's 1-11 famous "Timberwolf" Division in Europe; for his actions, he won 1-12 the Bronze Star in combat, the Combat Infantry Badge, and 1-13 Battle Stars; and 1-14 WHEREAS, A true artist of the people, Mr. Martinez has 1-15 painted patriotic, religious, and military murals for schools, 1-16 churches, and hospitals; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Honored for the high quality of his many works, 1-18 he was designated Artist of the Year by the League of United Latin 1-19 American Citizens Number 664 in 1975, was listed in Who's Who in 1-20 American Art in 1976 and 1993-1994, and was one of the national 1-21 artists who was invited to exhibit at the prestigious New England 1-22 Fine Arts Institute in Boston, Massachusetts; now, therefore, be it 1-23 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 1-24 76th Legislature, hereby congratulate Ernesto Pedregon Martinez 2-1 on his selection as Texas State Artist for 1997-1998; and, be it 2-2 further 2-3 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared 2-4 for him in appreciation of his notable achievements by the 2-5 Senate of the State of Texas. 2-6 Lindsay 2-7 ______________________________________ 2-8 President of the Senate 2-9 I hereby certify that the above 2-10 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-11 on April 26, 1999. 2-12 ______________________________________ 2-13 Secretary of the Senate 2-14 ______________________________________ 2-15 Member, Texas Senate
