1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 750 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great 1-4 pleasure in recognizing the 70th anniversary of the founding 1-5 of Amarillo College; for over half a century, this venerable 1-6 institution has provided its students with exemplary educational 1-7 opportunities; and 1-8 WHEREAS, Amarillo College was the first educational 1-9 institution in the state to be municipally owned and operated 1-10 under the Board of Trustees of the Amarillo Independent School 1-11 District; 86 students attended the college's first classes, which 1-12 were held in September of 1929; and 1-13 WHEREAS, By 1958, Amarillo College was granted its own board 1-14 of regents; this independence heralded an expansion in the 1-15 college's facilities and programs during the 1960s; in January 1-16 of 1973, Amarillo College's first "satellite campus" was 1-17 established; and 1-18 WHEREAS, In 1994, Amarillo citizens expressed overwhelming 1-19 confidence in their local academic institution by passing a 1-20 $26 million bond issue to renovate all Amarillo College campuses; 1-21 1995 saw the transfer of Texas State Technical College-Amarillo 1-22 to Amarillo College, which helped establish the school as an 1-23 excellent provider of business and industry training; in 1997 1-24 the Assistance Center was opened to help better serve the financial 2-1 needs of students and to raise the standard for student services at 2-2 all campuses; and 2-3 WHEREAS, To celebrate its 70 years, Amarillo College will 2-4 open all of its facilities to the public on May 1, 1999; the 2-5 community is encouraged to come view the college's campuses and 2-6 to take part in all associated festivities; and 2-7 WHEREAS, In 1999, Amarillo College remains dedicated to 2-8 providing exemplary education for Texans; after four years, 2-9 renovation of all the college's campuses is complete, and 2-10 Amarillo College faces the new millennium with a fresh face; as 2-11 always, its motivation and enthusiasm to educate and train 2-12 students remain abundant; now, therefore, be it 2-13 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-14 76th Legislature, hereby extend sincere congratulations to 2-15 Amarillo College on its 70th birthday and recognize May 1, 1999, 2-16 as Amarillo College Day; and, be it further 2-17 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared to honor 2-18 this special occasion. 2-19 Bivins 2-20 ______________________________________ 2-21 President of the Senate 2-22 I hereby certify that the above 2-23 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-24 on April 26, 1999. 2-25 ______________________________________ 2-26 Secretary of the Senate 2-27 ______________________________________ 2-28 Member, Texas Senate
