 1-4                                     of
 1-5                              Adolph C. Herrera
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
 1-7     of Bexar County in mourning the loss of Adolph C. Herrera, who died
 1-8     on April 8, 1999; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, A retired San Antonio fire fighter, Adolph
1-10     was the proudest of Texans; his ancestors were participants in
1-11     two of the most decisive events in Texas' history; Adolph's
1-12     forefather, Jose Francisco Ruiz, was one of the signers of the
1-13     Texas Declaration of Independence, while another of his ancestors,
1-14     Blas Herrera, scouted for the approach of General Santa Anna before
1-15     the siege of the Alamo; and
1-16           WHEREAS, This illustrious Texan's ancestry stretches back
1-17     even farther than Texas' quest for independence; Adolph was a
1-18     descendant of Juan Curbelo, a member of the Canary Islanders sent
1-19     by the King of Spain to establish the first nonmilitary municipal
1-20     government in what is now San Antonio; indeed, Adolph's impressive
1-21     heritage is a testimony to Texas' diverse cultural history; and
1-22           WHEREAS, Adolph was especially proud of the now-famous
1-23     portones, or gates, found on his family's ranch; these monumental,
1-24     mesquite-wood gates are typical of the Spanish colonial style; the
 2-1     family, as well as experts, believe that the portones were
 2-2     purchased from the Alamo prior to its famous battle; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, A generous Texan, Adolph shared his historic
 2-4     treasure with the public by allowing it to be exhibited in various
 2-5     museums; indeed, the historic portones symbolize the heritage of
 2-6     Adolph, and their display is a fitting way to honor the memory of
 2-7     this distinguished Texan; now, therefore, be it
 2-8           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 2-9     76th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to
2-10     the family of Adolph C. Herrera:  his wife of 58 years,
2-11     Hortense de La Garza Herrera; his sister, Sophia Langevin; his two
2-12     daughters, JoAnn Mendoza and Evie Patton; his seven grandchildren;
2-13     and his four great-grandchildren; and, be it further
2-14           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-15     the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from
2-16     the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do
2-17     so in memory of Adolph C. Herrera.
