 1-4                                     of
 1-5                                O. G. Nieman
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins citizens
 1-7     throughout West Texas in mourning the loss of O. G. "Speedy" Nieman,
 1-8     who died at age 70; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, During the Korean War, Speedy served in the
1-10     United States Coast Guard; afterwards, he graduated from Texas
1-11     Technological College and served as editor of its Ex-Students
1-12     Publications; and
1-13           WHEREAS, An exemplary reporter, Speedy Nieman began his
1-14     46-year career as sports editor at the Lamesa Daily Reporter;
1-15     he would work as a writer for the San Angelo Standard-Times
1-16     and the Midland Reporter-Telegram before becoming editor at
1-17     the Lamb County Leader and Brownfield News; in 1965, Speedy
1-18     became partner and publisher of the Slaton Slatonite, and in
1-19     1972, he served the Hereford Brand in a similar capacity; and
1-20           WHEREAS, When Speedy Nieman retired to become publisher
1-21     emeritus in October, 1998, he still continued to write his column,
1-22     "Hereford Bull"; and
1-23           WHEREAS, Ever the dedicated newspaperman, Speedy Nieman
1-24     was an inspiration to friends and colleagues; he recognized that
 2-1     careful listening skills are imperative to exceptional journalism;
 2-2     Speedy's honed abilities as a listener were key to his professional
 2-3     success; his genuine desire to hear and understand others built
 2-4     him a praiseworthy career and earned him the respect and love of
 2-5     his community; and
 2-6           WHEREAS, Speedy's many awards and positions of leadership
 2-7     in his field bespeak his journalistic integrity; he was president
 2-8     of the Panhandle Press Association in 1976, received this
 2-9     association's award for general excellence in 1978, and was
2-10     inducted into its Hall of Fame in 1996; Speedy was also president
2-11     of the West Texas Press Association in 1969; and
2-12           WHEREAS, Speedy was a boon to his community; he served as
2-13     past chairman of the United Way in Hereford and as an officer of the
2-14     Lions Club; in 1977, the Deaf Smith Chamber of Commerce elected him
2-15     their president, and in 1989, they honored him as Citizen of the
2-16     Year; and
2-17           WHEREAS, Speedy Nieman was a true gentleman and a dedicated
2-18     professional; he will be dearly missed by all; now, therefore, be it
2-19           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-20     76th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the family
2-21     of Speedy Nieman; and, be it further
2-22           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
2-23     members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
2-24     Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so
2-25     in memory of O. G. "Speedy" Nieman.
