1-1                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 790
 1-2           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is especially
 1-3     proud to recognize the Lena Armstrong Public Library on the grand
 1-4     occasion of its 100th anniversary; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, Citizens from Belton and the surrounding Central
 1-6     Texas area will join together May 12, 1999, to commemorate the
 1-7     establishment of the first library organization; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, The Woman's Wednesday Club held an "At Home"
 1-9     reception in 1899 to encourage the donation of at least one book
1-10     to the existing circulating library; as donations increased, the
1-11     need for a more permanent location became apparent; the Woman's
1-12     Wednesday Club Library was opened in a rented room in the Harris
1-13     and Walker Building; and
1-14           WHEREAS, These innovative women then began envisioning a
1-15     building to house the 1,500 volumes they had amassed; their
1-16     dream became a reality with the generosity of a $10,000 donation
1-17     from Andrew Carnegie; in 1905, the Belton Carnegie Library
1-18     Association was formed and the first public library was built;
1-19     and
1-20           WHEREAS, In 1975, the City of Belton built the present
1-21     library and Miss Lena Armstrong was the librarian; she spent
1-22     well over 50 years building the Belton City Library into a
1-23     major reference library with a nationwide reputation; and
1-24           WHEREAS, As a tribute to the late Miss Armstrong and her
 2-1     long-standing dedication to the intellectual well-being of the
 2-2     area, the Belton City Council renamed the library in her honor
 2-3     in December, 1998; now, therefore, be it
 2-4           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 2-5     76th Legislature, hereby extend congratulations to the citizens
 2-6     of Belton on the grand occasion of the 100th anniversary of the
 2-7     Lena Armstrong Public Library; and, be it further
 2-8           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
 2-9     library as a memento of the high regard of the Texas Senate.
