1-1                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 839
 1-2           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride
 1-3     in recognizing the Presbyterian Children's Homes of Texas and
 1-4     Lovemore House of the Presbyterian Church Street Children's
 1-5     Ministry in Harare, Zimbabwe, on the exceptional work being
 1-6     performed by these two ministries together; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, Every child needs and deserves a loving, secure,
 1-8     and nurturing home, and children in crisis throughout the world
 1-9     need the support of us all; and
1-10           WHEREAS, The Presbyterian Children's Homes of Texas has
1-11     provided homes with a heart for needy children in our state since
1-12     1903; and
1-13           WHEREAS, Concerned about the welfare of approximately
1-14     15 million children whose only homes are the streets in Africa,
1-15     the trustees, staff, and children of the Presbyterian Children's
1-16     Homes in Austin, Texas, have reached halfway around the world to
1-17     join hands with the Presbyterian Church Street Children's Ministry
1-18     in Harare, Zimbabwe; and
1-19           WHEREAS, Gilbert Chikuni and his staff, representing the
1-20     Presbyterian Church of Zimbabwe, and Maury Mendenhall and Bill and
1-21     Nancy Warlick, representing the Presbyterian Church in the
1-22     United States of America, joined with many other caring people to
1-23     open Lovemore House in Harare, Zimbabwe, on April 20, 1998, as a
1-24     haven for children living on the streets; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, Aaron, Chamu, Denis, Hamsa, Leon, Digmore, Dickson,
 2-2     Tonderai, Shingirai, and Emmanuel were the first young people to
 2-3     leave the life on the streets and find a new life of faith, hope,
 2-4     and love at Lovemore House; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, The children, staff, and trustees of Presbyterian
 2-6     Children's Homes of Texas have pledged to pray for the staff and
 2-7     children of Lovemore House and to offer them consultation, support,
 2-8     and encouragement; now, therefore, be it
 2-9           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-10     76th Legislature, hereby commend the coming together of these two
2-11     vital ministries to children in need and affirm and applaud the
2-12     work they are doing together to set young lives on a path of
2-13     positive growth and development; and, be it further
2-14           RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution be prepared for both
2-15     of these ministries as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
