1-1                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 842
 1-2           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is extremely
 1-3     proud to recognize Leonardo "Flaco" Jimenez for his furtherance
 1-4     of conjunto music by broadening its audience appeal; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, With the guidance of one of the pioneers of
 1-6     conjunto music in the 1930s, Leonardo quickly rose to fame and
 1-7     became an inspiration for the Hispanic community and its music;
 1-8     and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Born in San Antonio in 1939, Leonardo kept a
1-10     watchful eye on his talented father, Santiago "Flaco" Jimenez, Sr.,
1-11     and by the age of seven he was performing conjunto music before
1-12     live audiences alongside the elder "Flaco"; at 18 he was recording
1-13     his first album as a member of the group called Los Caporales; and
1-14           WHEREAS, Wanting to emulate his father, Leonardo adopted his
1-15     father's nickname "Flaco" and continued the tradition of taking
1-16     conjunto music to contemporary audiences; a remake of his father's
1-17     song "Ay te dejo en San Antonio" earned Flaco his first Grammy in
1-18     1986; his second came in 1990 as a member of the Texas Tornadoes
1-19     and his third was for his solo debut as Best Mexican American
1-20     Performance in 1996; and
1-21           WHEREAS, Even more acclaim came to Flaco in 1994, as he
1-22     was inducted into the Conjunto Music Hall of Fame and the Austin
1-23     Music Hall of Fame and won the Pura Vida Hispanic Music Awards;
1-24     contributing to all of this fame were his soundtracks and
 2-1     appearances in film, videos, commercials, and as a guest on
 2-2     talk shows; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, Conjunto music has become an integral part of our
 2-4     state's culture, and rising to the top in conjunto music has made
 2-5     Flaco a portrait of success for the Hispanic community; now,
 2-6     therefore, be it
 2-7           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 2-8     76th Legislature, hereby congratulate Leonardo "Flaco" Jimenez for
 2-9     his outstanding accomplishments in the world of music and commend
2-10     him for keeping conjunto music in the forefront; and, be it further
2-11           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-12     this inspirational artist as an expression of the esteem of the
2-13     Texas Senate.
