1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 858 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to 1-3 join the North American Brain Tumor Coalition in recognizing 1-4 May 2 through 8, 1999, as Brain Tumor Awareness Week; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Each year, over 100,000 people in the United States 1-6 are diagnosed with a primary or metastatic brain tumor; primary 1-7 malignant brain tumors are the second leading cause of cancer deaths 1-8 for children under the age of 19 and the third leading cause of 1-9 cancer deaths in young adults aged 20 to 39; and 1-10 WHEREAS, There are over 100 different types of brain tumors, 1-11 which makes treatment very complicated, and the incidence of brain 1-12 tumors is increasing, especially among the elderly; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Located at the control center for thought, emotion, 1-14 and movement, a brain tumor affects an individual's physical and 1-15 cognitive abilities and can be life-changing and devastating for 1-16 the patients and their families; and 1-17 WHEREAS, In order to improve the outlook for adults and 1-18 children with brain tumors, it will be necessary to expand the 1-19 research into the causes of these tumors and to discover better 1-20 treatments for them; and 1-21 WHEREAS, The North American Brain Tumor Coalition is 1-22 comprised of seven charitable organizations dedicated to 1-23 eradicating brain tumors; the coalition focuses on raising public 1-24 awareness of brain tumors and issues affecting brain tumor patients 2-1 and on advocating increased research funding; and 2-2 WHEREAS, The coalition is sponsoring the second annual Brain 2-3 Tumor Awareness Week to heighten awareness of this devastating type 2-4 of cancer and to seek supporters to join in the fight against brain 2-5 tumors; now, therefore, be it 2-6 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-7 76th Legislature, hereby commend the North American Brain Tumor 2-8 Coalition for sponsoring Brain Tumor Awareness Week and encourage 2-9 all Texans to recognize the first week in May as Brain Tumor 2-10 Awareness Week; and, be it further 2-11 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the 2-12 North American Brain Tumor Coalition as an expression of support 2-13 from the Texas Senate. 2-14 Wentworth 2-15 ______________________________________ 2-16 President of the Senate 2-17 I hereby certify that the above 2-18 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-19 on May 5, 1999. 2-20 ______________________________________ 2-21 Secretary of the Senate 2-22 ______________________________________ 2-23 Member, Texas Senate
