 1-3                                     of
 1-4                             Bill Eugene Smelley
 1-5           WHEREAS, Bill Eugene Smelley, patrolman, of the Quinlan
 1-6     Police Department, died tragically on September 18, 1983, and
 1-7     the Senate of the State of Texas would like to pay tribute to
 1-8     this gallant peace officer; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, A man of great ability and unquestioned integrity,
1-10     Patrolman Smelley was a courageous man who risked his life every
1-11     day to protect the lives and property of our citizens; and
1-12           WHEREAS, This exceptional officer was a man of great bravery
1-13     whose strong sense of duty was reflected in a deep commitment to
1-14     the welfare of others; and
1-15           WHEREAS, The courage and personal sacrifice of this dauntless
1-16     officer in the line of duty will constantly remind others of his
1-17     deep devotion to the importance of a fair and effective law
1-18     enforcement system; and
1-19           WHEREAS, Bill Eugene Smelley was a loyal friend and
1-20     outstanding law enforcement officer, and his memory will be
1-21     cherished by all who knew and loved him; now, therefore, be it
1-22           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
1-23     76th Legislature, hereby honor the life and memory of
1-24     Patrolman Bill Eugene Smelley for his supreme sacrifice; and,
 2-1     be it further
 2-2           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an
 2-3     expression of the highest respect and gratitude of the Texas Senate,
 2-4     and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in the memory
 2-5     of Bill Eugene Smelley.
