 1-5                          Willie Lee Campbell Glass
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Texas Senate joins the citizens of Tyler and
 1-7     Nacogdoches in mourning the loss of Willie Lee Campbell Glass, who
 1-8     died May 2, 1999, at the age of 88; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Born August 24, 1910, in Nacogdoches, Texas,
1-10     Willie Lee Campbell was the daughter of two educators, the late
1-11     E. J. and Mary Campbell; Willie graduated from high school as class
1-12     valedictorian and graduated from Prairie View A&M University in
1-13     1931 with a degree in home economics; she earned a master's degree
1-14     from Iowa State College, where she was one of the first black
1-15     women to complete the graduate program and the youngest student to
1-16     receive a master's degree; and
1-17           WHEREAS, She joined the faculty at Virginia State College
1-18     for Negroes and later returned to Nacogdoches to teach at her
1-19     former high school; she married the president of Texas College,
1-20     Dr. D. R. Glass, on August 27, 1936, and after moving to the
1-21     college campus in Tyler, Mrs. Glass began inviting groups of
 2-1     students to the president's home to teach etiquette and table
 2-2     manners; Mrs. Glass soon led the homemaking department at
 2-3     Texas College and served as a homemaking education consultant for
 2-4     the Texas Education Agency; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, Willie Glass was dedicated to her work in the field
 2-6     of education and was an exemplary lady who was respected for her
 2-7     many accomplishments and for her leadership in the community; and
 2-8           WHEREAS, After her retirement in 1963, Mrs. Glass was the
 2-9     recipient of a number of honors from organizations around the
2-10     country; she was inducted into the Texas Woman's Hall of Fame in
2-11     1985 and received the T. B. Butler Award as Tyler's Most Outstanding
2-12     Citizen; she was given an honorary doctorate in Humane Letters by
2-13     Texas College in 1988 and received Prairie View A&M University's
2-14     Distinguished Alumni Award; and
2-15           WHEREAS, Mrs. Glass was a member of the Texas College Board
2-16     of Trustees, the East Texas Lighthouse for the Blind Board, the
2-17     American Red Cross, The University of Texas at Tyler Foundation,
2-18     and the Stephen F. Austin State University Foundation; she was a
2-19     founder and director of the North Tyler Neighborhood Association;
2-20     and
2-21           WHEREAS, A woman of integrity, strength, and generosity, she
2-22     gave unselfishly of her time to others, and her wisdom, warmth, and
2-23     valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew her; and
2-24           WHEREAS, A devout Christian, Mrs. Glass was a member of
2-25     Saint Paul Christian Methodist Episcopal Church; and
2-26           WHEREAS, Willie Lee Glass was a devoted wife to the late
 3-1     Dr. Glass and was dedicated to Texas College and its students; she
 3-2     lived her life to the fullest, and she leaves behind memories that
 3-3     will be treasured forever by her many friends; now, therefore, be it
 3-4           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 3-5     76th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
 3-6     bereaved friends of Willie Lee Campbell Glass and to the citizens
 3-7     of Nacogdoches and Tyler; and, be it further
 3-8           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as
 3-9     an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and
3-10     that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
3-11     Willie Lee Glass.
