1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 891 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to 1-4 recognize the Third Annual County Wide Law Officers Memorial 1-5 Service, which is being hosted by the Wolfe City Police Department; 1-6 and 1-7 WHEREAS, The service takes place on May 14, 1999, at the 1-8 Wolfe City High School, and its attendees include members of 1-9 numerous area police departments, the Texas Rangers, the Texas 1-10 Department of Public Safety, the Hunt County Sheriff's Office, the 1-11 district attorney's office and the county attorney's office, and 1-12 other public agencies; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Exemplary individuals of courage and high moral 1-14 principles, the law enforcement officers of Texas dedicate their 1-15 lives to making the streets of our communities safer places in 1-16 which to live, work, and raise our families; and 1-17 WHEREAS, The legacy of the Texas lawman began with a small 1-18 band of men hired by Stephen F. Austin to provide protection for 1-19 the early settlers; these lawmen set the stage for the standards 1-20 of excellence that members of the Texas Rangers, our police 1-21 departments, and sheriffs departments across the state continue 1-22 to uphold today; and 1-23 WHEREAS, Our law officers are exceptional men and women who 1-24 deal daily with the unique challenges of law enforcement duty and 2-1 who face countless dangerous situations in their efforts to provide 2-2 protection for the citizens of Texas; and 2-3 WHEREAS, This memorial service provides an opportunity 2-4 for Texans to reflect on the innumerable contributions of law 2-5 enforcement officers to our state and to honor the memory of those 2-6 officers whose lives were lost in the line of duty; and 2-7 WHEREAS, The law enforcement officers from Hunt County 2-8 who lost their lives in the line of duty were John L. Southall 2-9 of the Greenville Police Department, Richard Emmett Shipp 2-10 and Rayburn L. Shipp of the Hunt County Sheriff's Office, 2-11 Tom Ellis White of the Wolfe City Police Department, and 2-12 Bill Eugene Smelley of the Quinlan Police Department; now, 2-13 therefore, be it 2-14 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-15 76th Legislature, hereby commend the law officers of our state for 2-16 the outstanding service they provide its citizens and pay special 2-17 tribute today to all those who were killed in the line of duty; 2-18 and, be it further 2-19 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the 2-20 Wolfe City Police Department in honor of this memorial service. 2-21 Cain 2-22 ______________________________________ 2-23 President of the Senate 2-24 I hereby certify that the above 2-25 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-26 on May 7, 1999. 2-27 ______________________________________ 2-28 Secretary of the Senate 2-29 ______________________________________ 2-30 Member, Texas Senate
